Typically it would mean that if you put load on it in a higher gear, the revs would climb and your speed would remain stationary.

The clutch disc spins on the flywheel because it can no longer hold the torque is what actually happens.

Put your car into 6th gear @ 60mph and floor the gas...if your revs skyrocket then your clutch is slipping.

Here's how it works.

on the crank you have a flywheel. The outter surface on the flywheel is machined so that it looks like a brake rotor.

On the tranny input shaft you have the pressure plate. This also has a rotor like surface on it, but also has the diaphram spring (really just a bunch of finger shaped springs arranged in a circle). the spring is what allow the pressure plate to to move in toward the flywheel.

Now, just like your brakes metal on metal contact is bad so you need a friction surface. On your brakes the pads to a really good job of this. In the case of a clutch think of it as a two sided brake pad with pad material on both sides (you have two rotors remember) and shaped like a doughnut. this gets clamped between the flywheel and pressure plate when you release the clutch pedal.

Just like brake pads things wear out over time, and just like brake pads they will wear faster the harder you are on them.

When a clutch slips it means one of the metal surfaces (usually flywheel side) is slipping on the face of the clutch disk (the doughnut).

the end result is an engine that revs without spinning the input shaft of the transmission as well as it should.

What you will see in the car is a jump in RPMs, but no surge forward. it will start in the higher gears, and as it wears out even more will start to slip in the lower gears.

I will try that 60mph 6th gear thing tomorrow. I dont know if this is related or not, but I have a sensor box that bolts into the dash like a CD player Link here Psi3 - ECU Data Monitors. - Subaru Single DIN LCD Data Monitor

When I am in 5th or 6th gear and I stomp on the gas, I get a High Boost Pressure warning. Should I worry about that?
