Default rear diff is making a sound

hey guys. my subaru is making some 'grinding' sound

its a 2005 sti with 36000 miles on it.

if you press the break while u are stopped the rear diff starts making a knocking sound if u turn the wheel all the way to the left or right..
if u don't have the breaks on (foot) it does NOT make that sound. the hand break doesn't matter if it is up or down.

just only when i have the foot break engaged and the when is getting tension from being all the way over

any links would be great.. taking it to the dealer later this week

Wow...

translating...

2005 STI with 36000 miles on it. (Stock?)

While braking, the rear end makes a knocking sound. It makes the same sound while turning the wheel to lock left or right, while moving (I assume(?)).

If you don't apply the brakes, the rear end doesn't make any noise. (I don't know what you're saying after this...)

Did I get the gist of what you're saying?

On that note, I'm going to go with Strut Clunk. If the car is still under warranty (at 36k it probably isn't), take it to the dealership to have rear struts replaced.

If you want our help, try to be concise, think before you type, and type in complete sentences that are grammatically correct. Then proofread what you typed.

Sorry.

I have had a hell of a weekend and I can't believe i'm still awake.

If you come to a stop, and the foot break is applied. Turn the wheel to the left or right, the rear Diff will start to make the 'grinding' sound.

I know its terrible to turn the wheel all the way while you are at a stop.

The way I noticed it is, I was backing up into my driveway, I heard a slight sound when the wheel was maxed out to the left, and the breaks were applied.

When I pulled into to the driveway, I put my foot on the foot break, and started to turn the wheel all the way left, and all the way right to diagnose the sound (or were it was coming from).

If the foot break is off it will not make that sound when the wheel is turned to the max. Not matter what it will not make that sound, only when the foot break is pushed.

I tested it with the e-break up, car in gear, but only makes the sound from when the foot break is on.

The STi has only the JDM pink springs, everything else is stock

Tomorrow I will see if I can video tape it on my cell phone to get a clear picture of what is going on.

I'm just wondering if it's okay to make a sound like that or not when the breaks are applied.

No worries.

Take it to the dealership, it's not normal.

sound like your rear rotors are warped, try pressing hard on the brake pedal alone several times see if it makes the noise.
