Default Clutch Questions

So my 05 just turned 70k on the odo and the stock clutch is finally smoked. What clutch do you guy's recommend? I put an ACT clutch in my old integra and was very happy with it. What do you think of the ACT street disk for our cars. Also what do you think about ordering a new flywheel? Only reason why I would order on is so I dont have to wait if i need to get the stock machined. Only real other power mods I may add in the future are meth and a 20g. Also how many of you have put a clutch in our cars yourself. I plan on doing mine up at school so I will have a lift and all the tools I need. Is it pretty straight forward, do I need any specialty tools? Also how is bleeding the clutch on our cars, does it take awhile?

6,000 on the six puck. The stock one went out after like 25,000.

That must be some harsh or extremely aggressive driving you have been doing.

You will be fine with the ACT HD disk for now and for you future plans. A puck clutch is not necessary for you. As far as the install goes, there is one tool that is recommended but not necessary. There is something (the name escapes me right now) that you put in the flywheel teeth to keep the flywheel from moving in circles when you back the bolts out of the flywheel. Two things that solve that, air tools and a big-ass breaker bar which you put a socket on and attach to the under drive pulley (I think its the under drive pulley, its been a couple of years since I did my install) to keep the crank from turning.

Breaking the tranny case off of the engine was not easy, and I had 28k miles on the car when I did mine and I had a hard time. Now yours may come off easy and it may not. If you will have prybars (use these gently if you even have to) available and a transmission jack, that will make things easier, but you will still have to do the 'transmission shuffle' to wiggle that thing off. You have an 05 STi, so there are no clips on the front axles like in the 04, but rather the clips are inside the transmission. So don't worry about removing them and installing them. You will or should hear a click when you put the axles back in.

Clutch fork pin, don't forget to remove this.

Now with regards to the throwout bearing, this is the way that I did it, but not necessarily the only way. I did not engage the throwout bearing to the pressure plate when the transmission was still off of the car. Here is how I did it. This is with the trans off of the car:
-Rest the greased throwout bearing on the PTO shaft coming from the trans.
-Put the clutch fork prongs in the c-shaped 'brackets' of the throwout bearing
-Re-install the clutch fork pin by sliding it in reversed order on how you removed it
-Thread the allen head bolt back into the hole that holds the clutch fork pin in place without torquing it in. Torque it down when it is back on the car.
-Now when the trans in back on the car, pull the top of clutch fork pin towards the back of the car. You will hear a click, this means that the throwout bearing is now engaged to the pressure plate.

Here are some links that I used when I did mine and also a thread that I used when I had trouble.

If you are planning on having the sock flywheel resurfaced, it is a two step flywheel. This means that there are two surfaces that need milled. The last time that I had a flywheel resurfaced it was around $100 for a two step. What I did so that I did not have to wait a day to have it resurfaced was buy an extra used OEM unit from someone here and had it done the day before so there was no down time.

I hope that this helps, let me know if you have any questions. KiTsuNe also has done his own clutch install...don't know if he will chime in or not, but the install is definitely do-able.

totally easy, just make sure you get the right throw out bearing.

advance autoparts gave me the wrong one, and so we had to do it all again when we realized it. (took us 16 hours the first time and 4 the second so the learning curve is massive)

also you don't have to disconnect the front cv's just slide the trans back and leave it on a jack while you undo the pp, clutch and flywheel.
I had my flywheel done at o'reillys in under 30 minutes for about $35.
Another trick is when you put the trans back in make sure and push the motor back, it has a tendency to move up, since the weight of the trans isn't holding it down.

I'm runnning a sprung 6 puck and it rocks, my stocker lasted 60k.

ACT includes a new throwout bearing with their kits. The only bearing that is not included in the ACT kit is the pilot bearing, which either the place that resurfaces the flywheel will install it or you could buy from a dealers parts department and install yourself.

Thanks for the advice/links. Looks like it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. I go to a technical school for auto tech and I have access to a lift, tranny jack, air tools and teachers to help so should be a piece of cake. Looks like I'm going to to with the ACT street disk. Still debating whether or not to get a flywheel. O'rly's machine shop is just right down the street. For those of you that have the lightweight aftermarket one, what are your opinions on it?

I don't have first hand experience with them on the STi because of experience with them on AWD 1g and 2g DSM's and a TT300ZX, both of which were returned to the stock flywheel one month later. That's my opinion. The facts are that overall they do not make your car faster, you do not make any more power, during launching and between shifts the revs are not as easy to control as the stock flywheel, and they heat up faster than the heavy cast stock unit because they are made of a lighter thinner material like aluminum that does not dissipate heat. As you know heating causes slipping and fried clutches, heating causes hot spots and heating causes warping; granted overheating is usually during 9/10ths and 10/10ths driving situations. Some people like them, I am one of those that don't and think they are more of a gimmicky waste of money part. I am a little biased, hopefully some people with them can post why exactly they like them.

I have act flywheel and clutch, they come with a release bearing, pilot bearing, clutch alignment tool, pressureplate and disc. They flywheel is seperate. The part number for the HD is SB013
i got the 6 puck extreme disc so i dont know if thats the part number you want.

You will need tranny fluid, if you want to replace your exhaust gaskets you can get those too but otherwise thats really it.
