Default how much additional rattles are you guys actually getting with SS and bushings?

This is driving me NUTS! First, i installed all the shifter bushings with Kartboy SS and it created Crazy rattles around the shifter assembly. ok, since i knew bushings and SS creates additional vibrations, so, i greased the crap out of the reverse lockout cable, heat shrink the cable and screwed the 2 screws under the lockout lever tight as i could. After doing all that crap, the rattles somewhat went away for couple of months but crap, they all of sudden came back! going above 3k in 2,3,4,5 gear created so much rattles, I can't think straight while driving. Because my wife and I couldn't deal with these rattles any longer, today, I decided to put back in the stock shifter. I decided to put back in stock unit because I first thought the rattles were generated by the lockout cable rattling inside the shifter assembly. After re-installing the stock unit, guess what? the rattles are still there! WTF? So, my question is... how many of you guys drive around with these rattles? How do I get rid of them without re-installing stock bushings?

I've learned to live with the rattles actually. I have all the upgraded bushings but still have the stock shifter and I've gotten the rattle down to a minimum but haven't gotten it to go away completely. It only rattles under WOT now so I'm happy with it cuz my TBE kinda drowns it out.

The one thing I did notice is that when you re-install the pin for the reverse lockout cable it pushes the end of the cable against the wall of the shifter. This was the main source of my rattle so I used a small screw driver and centered the cable as best I could inside the shifter then greased the inside.

Are you sure its not the cable hitting the DS? A lot of people have forgotten to zip tie it up...

Yup, check your clearance between your DS and reverse lockout cable. Mine wore right through before I reaized what it was. I had to buy a new cable then zip tied it in and all the noises were gone.

nah... it's not the cable hitting the DS. V8Huntr, i might try out your method. I think my rattles are also generated by the lockout cable hitting the inside the shifter, though my cable is covered with heat shrink material lol...

I just got KB SS, and TIC bushing....also having some rattle on the 4th and 6th gear....
I searched ,,,and most people were talking about the lockout cable should be zip-tied to avoid rubbing on the driveshaft....is it what it is?

Are you the guy that emailed me? If so did you take the center surround off and try and ID exactly where the rattle is coming from?

Once we know what part of the assembly is causing the noise we can start to address it.

That is usually the main cause for noise.

Initially i would have this loud annoying rattle above 3k rpm in any and all gears. The bolts at the pivot joint thingy would get loose after a couple of months so i followed TiC's advice and applied loctite to em and let em dry. After about 6 months there is no rattle whatsoever in any of the forward gears at any rpm.

I drove around with the center surround off but cannot exactly pinpoint where the noise is coming from. When ever I have my hand on the shifter itself, the noise is lessen but it totally doesn't get rid of the rattle. I really like what the bushings did for my shifter feel but it is very embarrasing when ever i have people in my car, other than my wife. lol...

btw, I wasn't the person who e-mailed you guys

My SS rattle mysteriously disappeared completely after about a month after the install. When it did rattle I tried everything ever posted to get rid of it. Nothing worked. I gave up, got used to it, now it's gone. What gives

Try very gently pulling up on the lockout ring and see if that helps. If so then you need to adjust the preload in the lockout cable.

That is done under the car on the washer for the front stay. it adjusts like a bicycle cable.
