Default Subaru Extra-S?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to pony up for the 20L bucket of Extra-S gear oil from Subaru. I know the Valvoline 75-90 GL-5 is comparable quality. And I've read the numerous forums about Motul, Amsoil, etc. I like how the oem fluid feels and the added sense of peace knowing that this will work without any problems.

Question: How long can you leave new transmission fluid sitting? Will it be okay to leave this bucket in the garage for 3-4 years or longer?

If I buy this fluid, I plan to keep it.

20L will last for approximately 4 tranny fluid changes. I have almost 20k miles now after only 9 months of owning this STI (lots of long-distance driving). So, I plan to change the tranny and rear diff fluids out every 20k miles.

What are your thoughts?
