Default Exedy Stg 1 Longevity

Well about two months ago, I replaced my stocker clutch with an SPT heavy duty street clutch ( Believe to be a re-badged exedy stg 1, organic, 7.7MM ), and spt lightweight flywheel. So far, so good...... I hope

Ive noticed that the only way I can get going from a dead stop smoothly is by depressing the clutch pedal, putting it into 1st, raise the RPM's to about 1.5-2K (1.5 idealy), and slowly release my clutch (proboably for about 2 seconds on average, 3 at MOST) until I get moving. Anything less will result in a jerky/lurchy engagement.

My question is, am I killing my Clutch taking so long to get into first? If so, how do I help/avoid this? If I keep this up, how long can I expect my clutch to last?

I bought the car with about 45k miles and the stocker clutch was releasing at about 3/4 of the way out from the floor. From my reading, this is normal for a subie clutch thats on it's way out. Also from my reading, that is considered some short clutch life in comparison to others. I really want this clutch to last for a long time, and get sick at the thought of paying for another clutch 5-10K down the road.

Next time Im putting the OEM clutch back in.... thank god I didnt buy the puck clutch from SPT.... I think Stg1 is overkill....

Thanks for any advice/idea's/suggestions

Pat

forgot to mention... I only rack up about 60 miles a week on average... basically to school and back and I avoid traffic all I can... less slipping of the clutch

from my knowledge, going a stage1 clutch over OEM (Which is also an exedy) is only done when you need to hold more torque, i dont know since its a stage 1 if it would last longer or not, but i would say save yourself the money and get a exedy oem replacement for about half the price as the stage1.

(i have 30k on my stocker and it grips fine)

You should try the "clutch" test, 5th or 6th gear cruising, mash the gas on the floor. If your rpms go up but you dont move your clutch is on its way, if it moves clutch is alright.

You should be able to start the car smootly with no throttle at all. It has plenty of torque.

Hydraulic/Subaru/aftermarket clutches don't necessarily engage super early. My twin plate has always engaged significanly higher than the OE clutch. Don't think that is necessarily something to worry about... although it does sound like you are burning up more clutch than you need to.

I've never actually tried that.... I just figured it would stall out and be an unpleasant experience... I have done that on like downhill area's or inclines but never on flat surface

you also need to remember that you put a light weight flywheel so that makes its a tiny bit harder to drive. but your fine dont worry about it

Sounds like you have a lot of clutch chatter, so that's why you're slipping it. FWIW, I had the Exedy Organic (Stage 1) and it started doing this @ 5K miles, and it kept getting worse. We finally pulled it at 12K, and the clutch was gone, almost down to the rivets. Never launched once, quick on and quick off, lots of rev matching. It was just a bad clutch (my stock clutch looked perfect at 25K ).

I hope you have better luck.

God I hate to hear that! My Exedy Stg I is doing the exact same thing as the OP. I got pissed at the airport one night because the stinking toll booth wouldn't sense my toll tag and the lady in the booth was saying my tag was borked. I knew it wasn't. The sensors at the airport suck. So, the gate finally went up and I revved the piss out of it and slipped the clutch real bad. The smell was huge! Since then, the clutch chatters and I have had to learn how to drive it differently to be smooth. My builder says I glazed it and others have said it will go away eventually but it hasn't. Just today in slow traffic, it was chattering and I come home and read this thread. Based on Flycasters results, I am thinking I don't have long with it.
Ever since I put the clutch in, when backing up my driveway and into my garage, the clutch burns and makes alot of wurrrrr, wurrr noise. And then the smell.
Basically, from my experience and from reading this thread, I think the Exedy stage I is a POS.
With that said, what is a great 400hp daily driver clutch to run in the STi?

Act Street, RPS Max, Exedy TP - that'd be my short list.

Do you get a clutch burn smell when you use reverse? That's when I knew it wasn't long for the car. However, a few other guys here really love the ES1, so hang in there...

Yeah, but I've got that since it was new, so that doesn't mean anything.

The clutch just burns more and I can tell it is not going to last near as long as the stocker and that makes me unhappy.

Yeah thats a bum rap bro. I have thankfully only smelled it burn once and that was because my grandmother was in the car and I was slipping like mad to not kill the car/be jerky

And to be fair, my clutch chatter/judder quit being so intense and frequent at about 500 miles... I just shift as little as possible and never quit moving

Ive found if I cut out all the city driving, take longer alternative routes around the city on long country highways, I enjoy the car and clutch alot more.

That way I get a chance to reflect, enjoy the car, and explore 6th gear
