Exclamation Urgent: Tire Failure. Safe for differentials to drive on 255/40-17 and 225/40-17

No one in town has the tires I want in stock so it will take three days to get new tires.

I had a complete tire failure this morning (another tire has a screw), but I need to get to work for three days <175 miles total.

I have (2) 225/45-17 RE070 that are safe to drive on (barely) and (2) 255/40-17 Azenis in similar condition. The miata.net tire calculator says that the rolling circumference is within 0.2% of each other.

I imagine the differentials won't be bothered with such a small difference, but I just wanted to check to make sure.

Well if the difference is only 0.2% then you should be ok until you get the new tires.

Just put the DCCD in open when you are driving around as the manual says. People drive around on the spare tire which is quite a bit different than a normal tire size...

Cheers,

Jay

By "open" are you referring to "auto?" I don't see open as an option.

The tires are effectively the same diameter. They could be much further out of tolerance and you'd still be fine for that duration.

Think about how much front/rear delta there is just driving around in the snow.

Open is when the DCCD nob/dial is all the way back, and all the way at the bottom (green) on your display between the spedo and tac!

READ THE MANUAL!
