Default exedy twin disc + daily nyc driver == crazy?

I have a element GT52, and am looking for a new clutch. (stocker is holding strong for 19K, 5K on gt52!!!) Anyways, looking into a Exedy twin disc, as I plan on adding meth in the future, putting me over 400WHP. Also looking at ACT HD SS street clutch. My question is, is a twin disc going to be a feasable daily driver for lots of stop and go (nyc) traffic? I put about 20K miles/year, like weekend drag strip, and 1-2X/yr HPDE. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

NYC traffic? It could be done, but I'd consider either the ACT or RPS Max first - frankly, any clutch will be a hassle in that traffic...

Will the ACT HD hold up to the kind of numbers I'll be putting on it?

yea it will.....ive got over 25k on my build and i DD my car with the stock clutch...no probs so far...traffic and everything....i dont launch it very often. The ACT is fine unless you like to drive like a jackass 24/7.

Exedy twin as in their Hyper Twin??
Yes, that would be crazy.
Not crazy-like-a-fox-crazy, just crazy-crazy.
If we're talking about the same unit (clutch+flywheel combo), it's a royal PITA. Enough so that I go to great lengths to avoid traffic.
And I live in Portland, a far cry from NYC traffic!

I'm still researching a better alternative for my driving. I hear good things about the RPS, just dunno anyone local who's done it...
Good luck!

Drive over and visit with the PDXTuning guys - they've installed about 20 of them.

I recently installed the Exedy Twin plate clutch/flywheel (300 miles). Clutch pedal feels exactly like stock. The car is easy to drive and actually I can drive the car more smoothly between shifts for some reason. The only drawback to the twin plate is the 'clanking' noise whenever the clutch pedal is depressed. I can really hear it during gear shifting while depressing the clutch pedal. At first, if I was at a stop and depressed the clutch, i could faintly hear the 'clanking' noise, but as I put more miles on the clutch, I can't even hear it anymore at a stop.

For me, the drivability and the power holding capacity of the twin plate exedy, far exceeds any inconvinience the noise causes. Just my two cents.

The noise at full disengagement decreases as dust builds up in the splines. And when it starts to get a little chattery just give it a couple of hard slip launches - that seems to clean off the plate build-up.

Who do you think sold me the Exedy?

Mebbe the pedal does, but the engagement sure as hell doesn't.
Holds like a MoFo, that I agree w/ you on. As far as "exactly like stock", even my friends who are fans of the Exedy won't go that far. (see below)
I could care less about the rattles, it's the On/Off "switch"-like engagement that kills me whenever I hafta drive in city driving.

I've driven in New York City... and I've driven in Bend, Oregon. Not sure Paul's experience is exactly apples to (big?) apples...
Although, I'll save the OP some time- Sciolist loves his Exedy Hyper setup.

As do I, and we even live in the same town.

BTW, are they calling for any big time flooding over in the valley in the next couple of weeks?

Not that I know of. I am a little concerned considering the 150' snow base they have at elevation and a chance pinapple express coming through. It would be 2007 all over again.

It's not the snow up in the mountains that concerns me - that'll stay cold no matter what. It's the 5' of snow they have on the ground in both the lower Cascade and Coastal foothills. That's what will immediately melt if we get a pineapple. I'll have to keep my eye on it - I have stuff over there I need to move quickly if it looks like it will happen.

Gotcha. Too bad you don't like the TP. Frankly, I don't think it's grabby or "sudden" at all, and neither does modaddict or sciolist. It slips really well, but you do need to be soft with it. I've driven it in LA rush hour, stop 'n go for 3 hours - no problemo.
