The popping/clunking could be your rear diff/LSD. Change the oil and be sure to use Subaru diff oil. Just a thought.

I am by no means a mechanic, so I can only speak from my own personal experience. I don't believe that you should be hearing any noises when going up a driveway at any angle. Obviously I can't know for sure the exact noise you are hearing, however I experienced the same type of scenario when making right hand turns into an angled driveways. It turned out that I broke my passenger side rear endlink. I would have the stealership check out those endlinks for you while you have it there for service. Just my two cents.

I sometimes hear something when I'm in auto but not often and it happened mostly when the car was new. 10 months later, I find that most times i drive in "open" (the bottom DCCD green light). Whenever it is open then I don't hear anything...ever.

the manual talks about these noises but again, it all depends how loud it is. If it sounds like a bullet hit your diff every day then I'd have the dealer look at it.

when I'm in auto I can feel the diff adjusting to changes in the streeing angle. Namely when I'm pulling off a driveway onto the road and accelerating more than normal, I'd feel a slight bump when the front wheels are about 20% from being straight.

also sometimes reversing in auto makes a slight bump at extreme angles.
