Default SPT Clutch kit... worth it?

Well I took my car out to run errands yesterday and surely enough it happened. I went to give it a little romp in second gear and my rpm's shot all the way up to 5-6K range and i wasnt going any faster

I went up to subaru and started looking at the "genuine subaru performance parts" catalog and talked to some of the techs up there. I asked about ACT clutches/flywheels but I was told to stay away b/c supposedly they had seen several customers with them come back in for replacement in less than a years time proboably just trying to sell spt stuff. So I suckered in and bought a

7.7MM (6M/T) organic clutch disk ( st302104s000) Spt heavy duty street clutch
7.7MM (6m/T) organic clutch cover ( st301004S020) Spt heavy duty street clutch cover
Sti lightweight flywheel ( st123104s000 )
and new shifter bushings and throwout bearings

this ran my bill up to a grand total of 1700 for parts and installation

I will definitely take pics of parts and post up before and after differences with the spt stuff, but I was wondering ( and yes i did my homework and searched first ) if anyone has any of the Spt clutch/flywheel components or has heard of them being good/junk? I notice that the exedy stage1 clutch is popular, I might have gotten it instead of the spt if I had looked at it first. Any experience/advice would be appreciated

Pat

I'm sure the SPT clutch is great with excellent streetability but for $1700 you probably could've gotten better parts

damn, lol. I figured it seemed kinda pricey, but they kept encouraging me to use it since they said they cannot warranty parts by aftermarket brands. This got me to thinking, I didnt think they warrantied the clutch components because they are considered "wear and tear" items?

They are probably telling the truth about people coming back soon with burnt out ACT/Exedy clutches. Some guys will think that a racing clutch is the best option, like the ACT 6 puck, and put it in. Those things will get toasted in no time by using them on the street where the clutch ISN'T always 100% engaged or disengaged. But about the ACT street clutch, I've heard nothing but positive results....

Don't know anything about the SPT clutch. Nobody buys SPT stuff except for the exhaust and intake, so I think you're venturing into new territory my friend! Let us know how it holds up over time..

well thats cool, too bad they cant get me in til next wednesday to do it (Holidays and all). Yeah I figure what the hell, subaru makes a good car maybe they can make good performance parts for them too. I saw that they had an spt intake in the parts dept, I asked how much and they said something like 300+ for it... maybe in a few months lol.

Just thought I would finish this post off

I got my car back from freedom subaru a few days ago. The spt clutch is definitely quite a bit more grabby than the factory clutch, and the lightweight flywheel combo really makes it more than it was. I had the master tech at the shop drive it around, and he was saying that it felt really similar to an act streetlight clutch. All in all, I would proboably do it again, since they are at least giving me a 3 month warranty on the clutch

Pretty sure the spt is rebadged exedy. Stock clutch is exeedy, and the spt 3 puck looks exactly like the exedy, so Im assuming the organic is basically a stage 1 exedy.

You didnt get raped that bad

exedy stage 1 and a fly wheel are maybe 7-800 and a t/o bearing is like $100, + shifter bushings etc

Installation is $500 most places, im sure more at the dealer, so you paid a bunch, but if you had gone a cheaper/non warranty route, it probably woulda cost you $1300 anyway

I wouldn't say imports are getting raped. You have to figure how much supply/demand and how many they make of any one part is compared to your average everyday piece of crap american car is. They probably make a kazzllion more of anything compared to imports, especially Subaru. To the OP you can never go wrong with SPT/STI accessories. How does it rev with the light flywheel?

and an organic clutch is a horrible example of that. other than the dimensions of the individual parts they're exactly the same as a domestic. same rivets, same steel. the only real difference is the pilot bearing instead of bushing. there is no way it cost more to make. it is supply and demand...there just isn't enough supply, i.e. competition
hey i just noticed your location is Yokohama, Japan. your car IS a domestic

The motor does rev a little faster.... It mainly is just a pain in my ass since this clutch is so much more grabby and hard to push down/release. I have since parked the car so I could have two of my rims re finished ( rotas ) but will have it back tomorrow. I will take it on a near WOT run and see if there is any difference in acceleration. I ordered an AEM short ram intake today, cant wait to put that on there now every spt intake I saw was tooo pricey
