Default Shifters

It has come to light that there is an option from the factory that somes sti's comes with a "short throw shifter"

I just got a used 05 STI, and I honestly feel like im going to break the shifter, feels really tall and wet noodle-ish, lots of side to side movement and its really hard to nail 3rd gear

I need to upgrade the shifter but need to be schooled on the basic information first-

1: How do I know if I have this "short throw shifter" I really hope I dont because if I do its the worst short throw i've ever driven

2: What are some reputable shifters? Would I need Just the shifter handle or the entire linkage?

3: Is there any kind of lock out on the STI trans that prevent shifting above a certain RPM? The tko600 in my old car had a lockout above 6500

Thanks

It's normal wear and tear that brought your squishy bushings to a slow death.

I recommend this first:

TiC 04/05 Holy Shift Set Turn In Concepts

if THAT'S still not good enough then pick up the Kartboy shift lever next:

...Or, of course, go with the whole package:

TiC 04-05 STi Super Shifter Set Turn In Concepts

You won't be disappointed.

I have installed Cartboy shifters and bushings in a 02 rex and a 05 sti and they are great value and work fantastic. They dont come loose like the cobb apparently do but that was just hearsay so dont bite my head off if you have one and it doesnt. Anyway I vouch for the cartboy it is real solid positive feeling.

I like my COBB double adjustable short shifter, too. TiC's bushing bundles are awesome. Kartboy and COBB are the shifters I hear about most often.

As in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Just search for TIC shifter bushings and you'll see tons of threads with 100% positive feedback on the parts!!!

I would suggest you keep your stock shifter for now if you think the whole thing is pricey and see how you like the bushing kit. It's a little over $100 and I personally think it's one of the best things I ever did to the car! Maybe if you're good Santa will bring it for you....

Agreed....start with the bushings first.

The old Cobb shifters were prone to stripped bolts and coming loose over time. The design sucked, so what Cobb did was redesign the whole thing and came out with a version 2 that simply rocks. They replaced my defective version 1 with all the parts needed to convert to the version 2 for free.

You can't go wrong with Kartboy, though. The only reason I went with Cobb is because I have the extended armrest and wanted to keep the stock height.

I have the factory sti ss on my 05. The upshifts feel ok but its the downshifts I hate esp 5th>4th. It just doesnt want to slide into the gate. I got all my kartboy bushings and the shifter in last week so it will be install time soon.

Dan I was thinking maybe sunday we could if your not busy
