Default Knocking noise while in lock...

when i set my diff to lock and i turn i always hear this odd noise, i've heard its the inside wheels trying to travel the same distance as the outside ones. however i just installed a tbe and now the noise is abnormally loud, and even happens on straightaways... any idea what might be causing this?

When the diff is locked, the drivetrain makes lots of noises. Fact of life.

The diff should only be locked when traction is at a minimum. Don't do it on dry or even wet tarmac. It's typically used for ice/snow and gravel/dirt/mud.

As far as the noise change, check the hangers and fasteners for the exhaust?

Also normal, though if you're concerned, you should take it to a mechanic and make sure.

Read the owners manual man. You're not supposed to have it in lock on dry tarmac. The noise is your center diff begging for you to stop.

If you've ever driven a car with an LSD before, you know that it won't like tight turns. Our cars have *three*!

the noise is your center diff slipping to allow the front and rear tires to rotate at a different speed. the center diff does not use clutches like the f&r, it uses a magnetically controlled pack that changes the amount of slip, thereby changing the torque split. When you turn too tightly, ball bearings in the diff have to slip past their cams. This is the sound you hear.

This is not a good thing to do all the time.

I had my center diff set two clicks back from full lock last night, during my commute home on empty, snow-covered roads. It was really cool because I could hear the center diff working. Even with snow on the surfaces though, when I was making parking lot maneuvers (low speed, tight turns) the diffs were barking at me.

Funny, I was running mine full rear for a little, and noticed the noise more from the front during slow parking lot turns, thought it was my steering rack slipping on my new Whiteline bushings but hoisted her and nope, everythings fine. Just ended up figuring it was the diffs doing their thing. Leaving it in auto for severe parking lot manuevers from now on.
