I'll try that. They said that if it's in the differential, they won't tear it apart to replace a bearing (not sure why??). They'll want to order a whole new rear diff. It might be cheaper for me to go somewhere that will only replace what's needed.

Easy fix? Could it be fixed with the right lub?

I hope so. What really torques me is that I bet I would have heard this and talked to the dealer if I had my winter tires put on earlier (read: before the warranty ended). They run so much quieter than the summers that the strange noise became audible.

Oh well. Maybe I should trade it on an '08. They also have a nice Forester XT Sports on the lot.

Replacing transmission bearing, is it a easy fix? How much? Are you on stock fluids (just wondering)?

The 60K service was done with stock fluids. I'm about to toss Motul fluid in the rear diff. I have no idea how much a transmission bearing would cost. I bet the bearing is cheap, but the labor is an arm and a leg, and then some. Rough estimate, anyone?

Hey windmill, when your synchros went out was it always making the howling sounds (hot/cold or both)?
