Default Questions, transmission fluid....

Does anyone know what type of fluid the dealers use? Is it ok to run a thicker transmission fluid? Will it affect anything?

The reason why I'm asking is because, i took my car to the subaru specialist and i told that my car is grinding when car is all warmed up but not when still a little cold. He told me that the oil is getting thin when the car heats up. So i was guessing thicker oil will help? I have no clue what to do anymore....Really need some help......

Not all of them. Some just use whatever with whatever usually being a valvoline product. In regards to the valvoline - I did not care for the synthetic even though some folks have recommended it to me.

OP - call your dealer and just ask them what they use.

I use whatever the dealer puts in there. They buy in bulk now from someone cause it costs less.

I needed to add some to mine at one point so I just put in the regular Valvoline 75w90 non synthetic gear oil and it worked perfectly fine. I was told not to put the synthetic valvoline in mine either.

synthetic vs non synthetic? So the fluid it comes with isn't synthetic (stock)?

I seen a bottle of valvoline high performance but it didn't say synthetic or not does that mean its not synthetic?

When I changed out my clutch/flywheel I put the Valvoline synthetic oil in. I didnt really have a choice as thats all I could find at the local parts stores and the car was halfway done when we relized oh ****. I ran it for about 5k miles and the trans started to feel notchy and almost stiff. I changed to the Subaru special oil and couldnt be happier. I wouldnt recommend anything but the Subaru stuff for the trans/diff. Ive read way to many horror stories on here to want to risk it.

lot of threads on this. Motul 300 75w90 synthetic for the trans and Motul PA 90 for the rear. These will work perfectly fine and they meet specs. No horror stories, no drama, just fact. If you try to run a mix of crap, a different weight oil other than Subaru calls for, or an oil that does not meet spec, some random stuff you buy from lack of planning ahead, or some other variation, then you get the horror. No need to make a trans/diff fluid change more complicated than it really is...don't listen to all the "horror, horror only run stock" uninformed BS.

Oh man, sorry i forgot to mention that i have motul 300 right now in my trans.

The weird thing is before that i had Redline in it, thats when it was making some weird sound. So i changed to motul 300 thats when the grinding started (while in gear driving, only 1,2,3 around 2,000-3,500 Rpm).

I'm thinking about trying a non-synthetic fluid......

Thanks for all your help guys, keep it coming.....

so is it grinding while cruising or shifting?
anyway, i've been on the Motul for ~ 2000mi now and i still occasionally get a 5th gear grind, but nothing like it was before

I have been using BG oil in the trans and rear diff with happy results (see below).

Ultra-Guard all-purpose Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75-90 API GL-5 in the brown labeled bottle.

Has anyone had gears or synchros or front diff go out before? What are the symptoms?
