Default Please help me troubleshoot my toasted ACT 6-Puck

Today, the clutch in my sti went

ACT installed in march at 43k miles

Currently at 61k miles

Middke of an auto-x it wouldnt go into second. Got it in and then at the finish, car died at the stop. Wouldnt start in gear. Put in neutral when car off and it would start, but not go into gear.

I started the car in gear and limped it home revmatching. (160 miles on the highway)

No issues, the clutch just wont disengage.

-Pedal feels fine
-Fluid if fine (bled a bit and no air)
-clutch fork moves normal
-no sound when it went
-no rattles when it drives

wtf?

I hope ACT warranties it. Im tearing it apart tomorrow.

Any advice on this is GREATLY appreciated. Putting the cluch in was a WHORE and I am NOT looking forward to pulling it back out in november in an unheated garage

this sucks

What do you have done to the car that requires a pucked clutch?

Catless, protune, Perrin ebcs, colder plugs, protune, meth injection and thats it

Stock turbo/IC/inj

307/372 at the wheels.

I auto-x a lot and The stocker slipped at 40k ish

I wanted something that I would never have to worry about that was PLENTY strong.

THink ACT will warranty it? Think its even the clutch?

I dont know what would happen that that clutch will still hold, the dedal feels fine, but clutch won t disengage.

Pedal feel and fork movement tell me clutch hydraulics are working okay and TO bearing is okay. Something internal in the clutch broke making it not able to disengage?

How do you know the TOB is OK? I think your best bet is to tear it apart and have look. It could be any number of things.

Although - I'm assuming you checked all the external hydraulics first...

Clutch has bluid and a small bleed showed now air. Pedal feels fine and I can see the clutch fork moving.

Id hate to pull the tranny and find I didnt need to, but Appears I have too. Im pretty sure its clutch related unless you can point me in a direction otherwise.

I need help pushing it into the garage, then Ill get started on it in a min.

Thanks for the help, Im feeling pretty ****ty here.

One of the springs on the clutch hub could have popped out or be broken, or the throwout bearing could have disengaged from the pressure plate(giving you pedal pressure but no ability to disengage the gear); these are the first things that come to mind. You really are going to have to take it appart to find out.

And so it begins again....

It is SERIOUSLY crammed into this tiny garage, like 4 inches clearance on the drivers sided, folded in the mirrors to get it in.

ITS TIGHT

Emptying out the engine bay

Some fuel to keep me going.....

Underneath it all

So far:

-Pushed into garage
-Up on Jackstands
-Removed front wheels
-Pulled Intercooler
-Removed starter
-Removed clutch slave
-Removed pitch stop
-Removed exhaust and downpipe
-Removed driveshaft
-drained tranny of 8 month old royal purple

Tomorrow:
-remove shift linkage
-droop suspension
-pull axles
-Unbolt tranny and drop out
-Unbolt clutch and see WTF went wrong
-wait for new Exedy from IMPORT IMAGE RACING

A 6-puck should really only be used for a track car. ACT has an Xtreme street disc don't they?

Thats rough I hope it works out for u. I remember when I did my clutch alone and in a small garage, what a pain. I pulled the engine forward instead of removing the trannsmission though which came apart and went back together fairly smooth, using just a floor jack is what made things tricky.. I'm using ACT's streetdisc with about 400whp and 40,000 miles now. Good luck.

Coming from and ACT 6puck to an Exedy 3puck is like going from bad to worse in terms of longevity. Unless your car is never daily driven you really dont need a puck clutch. Stick with a disk like ACT or RPS. For what its worth I have an RPS Street Max that has lasted me 36k miles, which for me is 10k miles longer than the stock clutch lasted.

Jesus. My ACT lasted 20k miles with moderate use.

You the think Exedy will last even shorter? The thing only made it 8 months. I cant be doing clutch swaps twice a year. You really think I should go back to organic?

I want something that is strong and will last.
