Default Whining diff/tranny

I have a 07 STi and I've found that there is a loud whine coming from the front of the car when I go past 125-135mph. The speed at which the whine starts seems to be dependant on load (less acceleration = higher speed). It does not change in pitch with speed. I'm worried that a few dirt-road excursions may have done something to the front diff or the transmission. Has anyone heard of or experienced this problem before?

from what i have heard, if you have a short throw shifter then that sound is almost guaranteed to be there at those speeds. i have had it(short shifter) since i bought it, but others said they noticed it after changing to the short shifter.

Interesting that the short-shifter would do that. I was asking since I don't recall the sound last time when I hit 140mph before some off-road stints. My front diff seems to bind a bit in reverse now too, which it hasn't done before.

Are you sure it's the diff and not the mirrors causing the sound? Read up on the howl created at high speeds from the mirrors.

Now that I think about it, that sounds more plausible lol! Would explain why I didn't hear it at 140+ last time....it was 90degrees outside.

haha I can't wait.

I just installed my KB SS & all the bushings. The whining is a bit louder now, for sure. I didn't expect that from just a SS.
