Default Clicking Noise ?

Ive got this nagging question ive always wanted to ask about my STI but never felt the need to until recently...noises usually dont bother me too much, but lately everytime i put the car in reverse and start backing up, theres an audible loud click noise that can even be heard when standing outside the car. Ive always wondered what the hell this could be...could it be brakes ? It happens before i even step on the brake pedal though...squeaks are understandable, but i dont know about this damn clicking...anyone know or understand what it might be ?

It's from the rear differential, it's normal.

Also, keep in mind the owners manual tells you to keep the DCCD in auto when in reverse..

You guys sure? I have what appears to be the same sound and it's not the "click, click, click" you get when turning slowly. It's one "click" when you back up as if your exhaust hits the diff.

Dealer told me it was my Prodrive axleback, so I got KB hangers. No change. If it's normal, weird, but at least I know. And the dealer is clueless if this is it.

Found a few articles, but I can't believe that I'd have a problem with the axle nut under 10K miles. Seems odd that it would be loose so soon too.

I think I resolved the problem. I loosened and re-tightened my axleback to spec: 25 lb/ft. So far, I haven't heard the sound after several attempts in my driveway (where it always happens. I probably had the bolts at around 40-50 lb/ft, so over-tightening may have been the issue.

IM going to have to try that axle thing...

I have the exact same "click"

its just a single click, seems to happen when downshifting sometimes, reversing, and when the weight of the car shifts... I can't seem to reproduce the click on command though and it doesnt seem rotational so I was kind of lost on this one

When I was a mechanic for volvo they had a similar TSB for a "click" that required retorque of the axle nuts, im gonna have to give that a try
