Automotive paints are not electro-static based there urathane based and simply applyed with air pressure and a h.v.l.p. gun. You may be thinking of the new water-based paints that require a special drying gun to cure them, or maybe your thinking of the guys that come around to car lots and do the "on the spot" jobs (they use turbine powered guns). Otherwise your simply thinking of powdercoating. I will ask about clear bras though, good point there.

By the way, automotive paints do have to breath thats how they cure. The solvents have to evaporate over time. Thats why autobody shops tell you not to wax your car for 90 days after you get it painted.

I'm not a paint expert, but everytime ive seen a car at the autobody getting painted it's always in a "kilm" or oven being baked for a good 24hours...
Yes it needs to "breathe" to cure, but several years down the road it doesn't have too.

I think I know what your talking about, some paint booths have heat lamps built into them. If It were a kiln like they use in powdercoating it would be a completely sealed oven with no windows. 24 hours seems way too long for a fresh paint job though. However, I live in florida so we barely ever use heat lamps to speed the curing process. Im not too knowledgeable on heat lamps, but Im sure they have to use them more up north.

I'm not attacking you, but rather curious.

So you are saying that P21S Carnauba wax for instance is not recommanded, although it gets great results on dark cars?

I thought Carnauba didn't contain silicons.

Please elaborate.

I clayed and waxed my car this past weekend. I used Meguir's clay with their quick detailer. I used Black Magic wax. It looks really good... then we got fog... damn fog

With regard to claying... you could clay a small area of your car and see how that feels compared to the rest of the body. If it feels noticeably better, you probably should clay the whole thing. It's a lot of work but if you take care of your paint you shouldn't have to clay that often.

I'm curious about the P21S Carnauba wax too. I understand that the paint/clear coat needs to "breath" in order to dry. However, when the cars out of the factory to the show rooms, the paint/clear coats are fully dry and they're fully cured. So, why does the paint need to breath later on?

your paint only needs to outgas for a certain amount of time... there is a point at which it no longer has anything to release... and honestly daily driving a car will reduce the life of the paint... the differences are negligable.

carnuba and sealant combo ftw.
