I've had much better luck with Mother's and Meguiar's.
I have been using Griot's for over 5 years with no problems at all. I love the stuff. It is quite sticky if not lubed up enough, but overall it picks up everything with no chance of harming the paint.

I used Clay Magic once and it was hard enough to actually start removing clear coat.

If number 7 didn't work, try #2, but you are doing the right thing by trying the least abbrasive stuff first.

Make sure to use enough clay lubricant.
