two bucket method is KEY, or get the grit guards off of Autogeek.net,

they are inserts that go in the bottom of your bucket, it leaves an area on the bottom where the rags are suspended and the dirt, sand etc can fall below, and never be touched again

If you have a free weekend, devote an entire day to detailing your car. It's hours of work, but I'm sure others can testify: It's well worth it.

I do a full detail every 1.5-2 months, and I usually spend 5-6 hours on interior and exterior. Using a clay bar does wonders for removing impurities in the paint and will leave the paint smooth. Clay Magic and Meguiar's Clay are both great products.

As others have mentioned above, I also use two buckets to wash. One bucket with soap and the other to rinse your wash mit as you wash the car. That would help separate the dirt from the clean wash water.

I like to put down a layer of sealant and then apply a wax. I prefer to use 4 Star Ultimate Paint Protectant for silvers (my car is titanium gray mica). Looks extremely wet when you're done and it's easy to use. A professional detailer would recommend polishing before applying sealant, but I haven't polished yet.

Anyway, a good detail is probably what you need to get your car clean. Good luck and have fun!
