Default Washing the car ..

So one of my friends work at Subaru and just cleans and moves cars. I gave him $1 to wash my car. He than pulled out this bottle with purple fluid and just started to spray my wheel. ... Alll the damn brake dust just fell off ... !!! When he was spraying it .. I took a whiff and it like shot straight up my nose such as wasabi.

After rinsing .. it was white like it just came out of the show room ..

He also used this brush like thing that is quite soft on our cars so it won't scratch. He washed my entire car within 5 mintues becuase the brush was so long.

Does anyone reccomend this over washing the car by hand with a mitt? It takes me a couple of hours when doing it by hand whereas my friend only took about 10 minutes.

First of all, the stuff he used on your wheels was acid. It'll remove just about anything but I wouldn't recommend using it, it's bad for the finish. It should only be used as a last resort if your brake dust is so caked on it won't come off any other way (which can be avoided with regular washing/waxing). And as far as washing the car, I would stick with a sheepskin or microfiber mitt. Those big brushes trap abrasive dirt, whereas the mitt will not harm your finish as long as you keep it clean. When it comes to detailing, generally the products that provide the best results take more time, but IMO it is well worth it.

Yea, that was probably acid, not a great thing to use everytime you wash. I dont like brushes, not much defence against marring/scratching.

Safest bet would be for you to wash it yourself even though it does take some time. Those large brushes can clean the car quiclkly but they are also harder to clean themselves. By that I mean that since the brush is so big small stones are hard to get rid of in the brush which can lead to scratching on the paint. This is why I always use a hand mitt, easy to keep clean and get the dirt of the car.

Don't know what liquid he used but it might not be too good for the paint if it's that strong. I would recommend using some normal car wash soap. I know that sometimes it's easier to go for the quick clean but better you clean it with a mitt and best if you do it yourself.

When I drop my car off for my oil change at the dealer I tell them not to wash the car. I let the mvacuum it though

I pretty much just use the local mobil touchless wash 1 time a week and once a month I'll wash my car by hand. I used to wax 5-6 times a year on my own...but now I just get it detailed 2 times a year (once in spring and once at the end of fall)

A detail guy does 5 hours of work for me for like $125...well worth the PITA of wash, clay bar, wash, etc IMO

eagle 1 wheel cleaner is the best you can buy off the shelf imo, and wont harm the finish of the wheels.

like everyone said, stick w/ a sheepskin mitt and WW to dry off.

If you are truly a car person, you could not bare to go through a car wash in the spring or the summer... I love to wash my car and if I drive it a lot in one week ( it is not my only car) I wash it twice! I wash my car with buckets of hot water outside in the freezing cold winters here in CT.

When I picked my car up from the dealer BRAND NEW i would not even let them remove the plastic from it... As soon as they wash it with the brush, so hello to swirl marks, right off the lot.

I know I am EXTREME, but give your subie the love they deserve

actually the stuff he used on his wheels was really good all purpose cleaner (wheel acid is NOT purple, it's clear)

the all purpose is very strong.
you can use a brush if it is paint safe..it's the same as a mitt just on a pole..make sure the bristles are nice and check them for debris...but i still wouldn't want to use one

i use a microfiber mitt which is great, no scratches and nothing gets stuck in the weaves..

but again, that stuff was not wheel acid and wheel acid is to only be used on severely messed up wheels to get off very old, caked on brake dust and other spots.

You defenitly want to stay away from acid based products.

P21S wheel gel is great for the wheels.

I prefer to wash my car myself, I don't trust people (just the way I am) plus I detail cars on the side.

When I pass by those public car washes and see 4 different people working on the same car, using the rugs they just used on the wheels in the interior...I don't know if to laugh or cry.

P21S is what the porsche people use. Expensive but awesome.
