Are you cleaning the inside of the muffler tip or the outside?

Though not directed at me I'd be cleaning the outside...is steel wool safe? It won't scratch the **** out of the exhaust?

The only reason I recommanded using steel wool is if you have some rust on there, otherwise no need to use it for regular cleaning.

Let me do some research on the steel wool grade.

I have what seems to be rust right at the tip. But I also have this rust color on one area where the tip meets the canister, but it doesnt feel like rust.

Allright.

Try the Meguire's NXT metal polish (or any other good metal polish) with an older rug. This should remove it, if not we will go to something more abrasive, so HOLD OFF on the steel wool for now.

My rule of thumb (with paint, metal or whatever area you're working with) always start with something less abrasive, then if that doesn't work, step it up a notch.

Can you by chance take pictures of your exhaust tip?

Default Steel wool

Ok, here is the article about using steel wool to remove rust from chrome. I believe our STOCK exhaust tips are chrome, not sure if it will scratch other metals, so if you do decide to try it, try it on a small, no so visible area. Ofcourse after using the steel wool you'll have to use metal polish.

http://store.bettercarcare.com/metalpolish.html

According to the article, steel wool grade # 000 or superfine which is #0000 should work.

I haven't used this method myself though, so if the metal polish doesn't do the job and you decide to use steel wool to tackle the rust, go with the superfine first and test a small area.

Default Car Cover

If you're a car nut like me, and chances you are, one of the things you may want to look into is a car cover.

There are many different types of car covers, some are better for cars parked outside and some are better for those who keep their car in the garage.

I have purchased my Evolution 4 (no, not a Lancer Evo 4, but the car cover model name) from http://www.autosportcatalog.com and been using it for over a year. This specific model is good for those who keep their car inside the garage and want to keep the dust and other pollutents away from it. It's also very durable and protects against door dings.

Now I'm looking for a car cover for my second car, my 94 Integra daily driver, as I'm trying to keep it in better shape. The Teg sits outside for now (until I get my own place) so I called Autosportcatalog and they recommanded the Weathershield car cover.

So if you're thinking about a high quality car cover, checkout

I know exactly what your talking about, it actually is rust. You could try steel wool, but the best thing to get rid of it is Naval Jelly.....but be careful, this stuff is seriously corrosive. You can usually get naval jelly at a good hardware store.

Bring a book or something to do, because my "transformation procedure" takes about 4 hours (at least).

Also be prepared to have alot of people driving by and slowing down to look, this is a normal side effect of the "transformation".
