IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | Winter is approaching and this is my first time living in a chilly state with a car that I actually care about. (my first car was 96 Ford Escort beater so I crash and bash that thing ) This morning it started icing a bit in the windshield and that got me thinking... What is the safest (not the fastest) way to remove icing and snow from your car in the morning without damaging / scratching the paint? I used one of these plastic thong things to remove ice on my previous car. Does that damage our 1 nanometer-thick Subaru paint? This ad is not endorsed by this member. | Silver Member | I don't get it. Why are you removing the ice from the paint? Just let it melt off on its own. Most people just scrape/deice the windows on the morning. |

If you have snow that has accumulated on the paint, brush off the top layer of the snow, but don't bother removing the last half-inch or so. Let the sun melt that last half-inch. By not trying to remove it with a brush or other apparatus, you'll avoid scratching your paint. Gary |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | Well, I can't drive my car with ice falling off while the car is in motion. What if it doesn't melt? Around the bonnet sure it will melt if I leave the car running but roof, trunk and body panels? |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | well i just use brush wipe the snow off but leave ice there, but for window, just use brush too and if ice. use the scrape but faster is use windshield washer fluid and make sure use the red/pink one not blue because that red/pink wont freeze after defrost the ice on the windshield. its my fav part when its wont get ice again after defrost it. |

as a word of advice... the sooner you come to terms with how crappy our paint is and realize that damage is inevitable, the happier you will be. Take pride in your road rash.

![]() Investing in a quality snow broom (Snow Broom or* SNO BRUM** Forget that crappy snow brush) for your car will do the trick. Won't scratch your finish. But like most guys said: 1. Start the car and let it heat up 2. Set all options to defrost 3. if ice/snow still there, then remove it with your snow broom. Sometimes, there is no right way to remove ice or snow from the car.
