Default Remove Previous Wax First?

I want to clay bar and wax my car again. I did it 6 months ago.

Should I use a dish detergent to remove the existing coat of wax or just clay bar and wax over top of it?

i didnt remove the wax first. I just washed, clay barred and rewaxed. I think any wax that was on there would be gone by now. That is unless you kept it in the garage the whole time and under a car cover

Claying the car basically removes old wax.

Use dish soap... What i do twice a year. Spring/Fall wash with dish soap then i clay/wash/polish/seal it

If you want a quick solution for when you want to strip old wax (if you dont want to use dawn wash) use a 1:1 mix of Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water just put the IPA solution is a spray bottle and do a thorough wipedown of the paint.

The detergent helps remove more than just old wax... light tar, bug carcasses, and overall road grime are also stripped. I assume you are going to fully detail your vehicle if you are going to clay your car... in that case, I'd wash with dish detergent, clay ( recommendation: Meguiars clay), wash with a quality car wash (recommendation: Meguiars Gold Class), polish (recommendation: for light scratches/scuffs - Optimum Polish... if additonal corrections need to be addressed PM me), seal (recommendation: Klass All-In-One), and wax (I use Pinnacle Souveran in the summer (a carnuba.... excellent finish but poor durability) and Collintine 476S in the winter (decent finish but execllent durability). Hope this helps!

I ended up using dish detergent, drying it, and clay barring with Meguiars.

Then I just waxed it with Meguiar's NXT Tech wax.

How did it turn out? (I'm sure it looks great as NXT is a great wax (both V1 and V2) )... you should post up a picture to two!

It turned out pretty good with NXT. NXT is the cheap man's way of making it look almost new. I was impressed with it after I used it on my parent's cars for their bday.

I use dish soap in a foam gun, claybar, then a couple coats of carnuba.

The best wax I've found so far, great to work with and comes off wet, no hazing or residue. Not exactly cheap though.

Yup... Souveran beats the hell out of the competition (even waxes costing significantly more)... the only problem is its durability... in the southwest heat, a coat only lasts a week or two (at best). But, if you have the detail time, Souveran can not be beat (especially on OBP).
