Is there a need to polish a car if it is mainly garaged (i.e never sees rain or snow)? I have never clayed or polished. I usually wash, dry and that's it. Wax every 4 or so months but whenever I wash the car it still beads so I guess the wax is still on there. So what ruins the paint more? Rain or sunlight?

There is no need, but a nice polish + gloss will really make the paint shine! Not exposing the car to the elements definitely helps keep the paint looking nice.

Just wondering, do you need an oribtal to polish? or is there a method someone uses who might not have one?

Polishing is usually pretty difficult without an orbital for me.

Make sure before you clay you wash with dish soap to get the wax off.

FYI, I see this pop up a lot as a suggestion, but you do NOT need to re-wash your car after you clay. Simply keep a rung-out damp microfibre towel with you and towel off each panel after you clay it. From there, you can go ahead and polish then wax.

Wash
clay
cleaner polish
polish
wax
maintain

let the wax sit for 15-20 mins or more depending on the weather. More hot or humid let it sit more.

How much does waxing protect? Will it keep my black car from looking like a leopard after it rains? Is it worth my time to wax every few months or should I just wash it more frequently?

Any reccomendations on an inexpensive orbital buffer? What kind of buffer pads are good for removing scratches in the clearcoat?

Just tryin to keep her looking new....

My car is garage-kept. I wash it once a week at the car wash (handheld spayer only). While there, I also use the wax they have since it isn't that great, but helps support my actual waxing. I've heard things about the downside of weekly waxing, but have found no empirical proof to support any of it.

The interior gets details every 2-4 weeks.

I clay bar a couple times a year (so far). Prior to claying, I wash it with a bucket and duel textured sponge (netted on one side and microfiber on the other.) After the claying, I've tried a polish (but only once) and did it all by hand. It may be because of this hand application and removal, but I saw no improvement from the polish. After that, I waxed with real wax.

After my weekly wash, as needed, I hit it with the Quick Detailer. That combined with the car wash wax makes it look almost as good as a freshly clayed/waxed car....at least for me.

(All the products I use are Meguiars...)
