I know.... its a cheap-o but my girlfriend got it for me for christmas. Just dont have the heart to take it back. My question is, would it be a good tool to learn on because Iam a complete newb at polisher's. My brother (sinister redline on here) who is a certified ppg painter and has been painting cars for around 15 years now said it would be great for me but everything Ive read on here makes me worry its not good enough.

Iam not to worried about the paint because sinister already told me we are going to repaint my car with silver camo..... not my idea but he says it will fit because Iam a army vet. And also he wants to paint his sti the color I wanted.... gun metal gray.

Also have 4 7 piece ultimate meguiar's car care kits that she got me. lol

i have the smaller version from craftsman. it's not bad and it's pretty hard to mess up. i would give it a try.

I'm thinking about buying the 6" from craftsman. Let me know what you think after using. I think the 6" would be easier to use around all of the STI's molding and etc.
Anyone that has used the craftsman and has an opinion, the feedback would be awesome.

its definitely a good place to start... im sure you will catch on quick and even figure out some tricks for yourself... i think the next step up would be something like a PC 7424 or a UDM, or even a FLEX tool. then you step into rotary territory...

definitely keep the thing tho man.

does it really help with removing swirl marks, or does it just make waxing easier?

That polisher is a circular type, which means it spins in a circle, like a top. This type of polisher has the potential to ruin paint, if not used the right way. It does so by generating too much heat, and ends up marring or burning. However, I don't know if this particular guy is powerful enough, or if the pads that come with it are course enough to dmg the paint... but there is the potential.

I myself use the PC 7424 random orbital buffer. This type doesn't spin in a circle like a top, rather the whole pad shifts in a orbit, just like the motion your hand would make if you were to do it by hand (like the karate kid... "wax on, wax off". This type doesn't generate anywhere near as much heat, and is certainly safer for the average user.

What pad compound and what polish compound you use is even more important.

I suggest reading here... lots of how-tos, does and don'ts... etc.

The craftsmen is a orbital buffer....so its not going to hurt my paint I guess. Havent had a chance to use it yet though.... maybe in feburary, I'll bust it out because I'll be able to get my car in the garage.

I have the 10" since 1996 approx. and the 6" since mid 2006. I like them a lot, but I am not a detailer!!! Most of the people always like the paint condition of my cars.

10" is more powerfull but the 6" is more compact.

Cant go wrong or at least you are not going to ruin ur paint.
