Default Tuning Alchy/Water Injection?

Has anyone tuned water injection in ST? I'm planning on getting the SMC kit and am starting to put together a map to start tuning. Basically what I have right now is my 107oct. racegas map turned down a notch for boost/wgdc and decreased the timing about 2 degrees throughout the higher loads hitting 32 at redline. My AFR targets are pretty much the same as my tuned racegas map shooting for 11.9-12:1 accross the board. I am planning on using a 50/50 mix of alcohol/water with the controller set to kick in at 10psi and progressive to about 17-18psi.

How does that sound and for anyone that has tuned a setup already do you have any tips or tricks to getting a good tune with water injection? Also, should I need to adjust any lower load values for say partial throttle where I may hit 10 psi briefly? Lastly, will the AFR target table need to be adjusted to compensate for the injection [not tuned, just raised or lowered since the stoich of the injection is different]? Any input would be great. Thanks.

I'm planning on adding injection myself, if I ever get around to it. Just need the time and energy. If you get to it first, please post how the tuning goes.

Ok, so I am thinking the timing/boost on my 108 oct. map is a bit too aggressive especially for a DD tune. This is what I am going to do instead, I am going to go off my existing 93 tune since the target AFR's have not changed even to my racegas map and just the added timing leaned out the AFR's like crazy and my target AFR's are already in the 12's to achieve 11:1 on pump. I am going to have the injection controller set at 10psi start and 15psi max.

Then I am going to do a short WOT burst, let off and check the logs. Since I already have boost at about 19 thats all im really trying to run DD anyways, so I guess the only changed I am going to make are to the primary ignition table. I am going to keep adding a 1/2 degree of timing starting with the higher loads/lower rpm's doing short WOT bursts and get that all dialed in before moving to the higher rpms/lower loads. I am going to shoot for about a 12:1 AFR at VE and probably a 11.8:1 at redline. I'll see how that goes with the according timing and will either end up with 12:1 across the board or a high 11 to keep it safe. Ill just need to keep a eye on the wideband and pick up a knock link for some added safety. Ill let you know how that goes. I am changing my approach because I have talked to a couple of people who have tuned starting with a stock map and went from there which means it should be ok to just start fresh off my 93 tune where my timing is already aggressive and theoretically the injection should be some extra saftey so I should see some great timing across the board, but I am not planning on running it too aggressive just in case anything should happen with the spray so my motor doesnt blow up. In reference my racegas map added about 4 degrees of extra timing with a lot of extra boost. I am probably only going to add about 2 extra degrees and hope that my AFR go up as well. 93 plus 50/50 mix should equal about 108 octane so when I want to have fun, ill just flash in the racegas map (ofcourse after making sure all is well big some logs).

Stay tuned, should be good to go by next week.

I have the SMC kit, need 2 parts to finish the install should have them mid next week. I can't give any personal experiance yet but will post back when I get it running next week.

On a side note I have been reading up on using Lambda vs AFR once I start running the Alcy. 1 lambda for gas is 14.7 but it is ~6.4 for methenol. Since the AFR meter calculates that AFR based on lambda and is calibradted to 1 lambda = 14.7 your actual AFR's once you start spraying my not be spot on because you fuel mixture has changed.

Here are a few good posts on other forums concerning this, hope it helps. The first is probably the most informative and you will probably see some of what they are talking about once you start spraying, may help with your inital map.

Yea I knew that already. I had already planned on using lambda when I start tuning just to be on the safe side. I think I have a pretty good map to start tuning with, but my only concerns right now have to do with 1st and 2nd gears where the loads, boost, etc. are going to be very hard to fine tune. Since the controller is progressive and is set to say 10psi to start spraying you may be hit that to very late in the rpm range and yet be running too much timing at those rpm's and blam say bye bye to the motor. Some people have set the controller to a very low spray setting to help compensate for it, but I think my plan of attack is to start out and try to be able to hit target boost constantly in every gear, especially in 1 and 2. It will not matter too much to me if I am overboosting a bit in 4th... because I know it will be spraying at least. Im probably going to start it at 7psi and max out at 15 so I know it is going in all gears and start with only 2 more degrees of advance on top of my 93 map and go from there to be safe.

Let me know how your complete install goes and how you went about tuning. Thanks.
