Default Part throttle, 10PSI, 3K to 5K pull: EGT stuff

I was getting some increasing EGTs on the highway when holding 10spi from 3000rpms to 5000rpms in 5th or 6th gear. At 5000rpms the EGTs were increasing to about 1600d F which is just too high. I wanted to fix this because although I very rarely hold part throttle in this manner I could easily see someone else doing it (i.e. my wife, or a friend when I trade vehicles to borrow his truck, etc).

I first tried fixing this by leaning it out thinking that the mixture was too rich (12.5:1). No dice. I tried 13:1 and 13.5:1. EGTs climbing steadily. I added more dynamic advance ... 2 degrees worth. No change. Finally, I started richening up the mixture (I kept the extra advance). EGTs stabalized. My EGTs now hold at 1500d F when accelerating/holding 10psi from 3000rpms to 5000rpms on the highway in 5th or 6th gear.

3000rpms = 12:1 AFR
3500rpms = 11.75 AFR
4000rpms = 11.5:1 AFR
4500rpms = 11.25:1 AFR
5000rpms = 11.0:1 AFR
2 extra degrees of advance

My car seems to want more fuel than other cars. Just wanted to throw this out there in case anyone ever experiences a similar situation.

We can

However, I have too many other things to take care of before dropping $500 on a water injection setup (SMC kit is the one I like). I'll just run slower and richer until I get all my other things taken care of .... then I'll get water injection and lean it back out.

I never would have thought that 10psi would want between 11 and 12:1 AFRs. People run 12:1 at WOT with 18psi so why would I need WOT AFRs at only 10psi. Weird. Oh well. I have learned to give the car what it wants ... nothing more, nothing less. This is definitely what my car wants. I might be able to hold the AFRs leaner going to 5000rpms. I am not sure it needs to dip down to 11:1. However, the 12:1 is absolutely needed. I should try leaning out the taper ... and maybe do a 12:1 tapering to 11.5:1 at 5K and see if that still keeps EGTs in check. Maybe I'll do that tonight.

I have been tuning for about 11 years now and I still come to this conclusion. I have tuned, I4s, rotaries, turbos, superchargers, V8s, V6s, anything from 24 ft lbs to 1158 ft lbs of torque, used different fuels, EM, dynos, injections, tried praying, etc. This seems to be the golden rule for tuning. Listen to, watch, smell, feel, breath in what the motor is communicating to you, then give the motor what it wants. Do not force it to do anything else.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Christian.

And do you gather what the motor wants by it's "learning" maps, etc?

I had the same problem. My tuner said it was something with cam values. I hope this helps.
