Default Timing change increments

When you guys tune, how much timing do you add in one run for testing? I'm trying to control EGTs in the upper RPMs, so, I just added a min of .3 degrees and a max of .6 in some areas for starters.

Is this too small for even a "small" change?

I tend to use as close to 1 degree as possible. 0.3 degrees is just too small IMHO.

I think what all of us really need here is a way to determine knock. I'm getting really curious about TXS' stand alone knock light that can be used to observe activity on the stock knock sensor.

... I have also been giving a lot of thought to NOT tuning my timing until I have a way to observe whether or not I am producing knock. I don't like doing this blind ... and that is how I feel. I feel blind when tuning the timing ... and that is yicky.

One of the only valid ways that I have seen so far is what Christian from Cobb has suggested. That suggestion is to pay close attention to the dynamic advance being added. Log it. If you find that the Dynamic Advance is always positive in a certain area then add a fraction of that over to the main advance. This method uses the knock activity of the stock sensor. The DA will only be positive consistently if no knock is detected. Thus, if your DA is positive then you can add some of this over to the main ignition because the car has shown you over and over again that it wants more in that area.

Give the car what it wants .... nothing more ... nothing less. Don't give YOUR car what somebody else's car wants

I've never seen my DA at anything less than 1 during the last 20 or so logs I've looked at. I'm also sensitive about changing timing around peak VE, more so than later in the powerband. At this point, I'm just trying to get my EGTs under control before I try and get to my boost targets.

The changes I made last night, however small, seemed to move EGTs lower, I'm hopeful that a few more advances in key areas will help even more.
