Default Surging EGTs once off throttle

I've leaned out my target AFRs up top, and actually richened up a few areas around peak VE (all based off of stage2 v.104). I can post a screen shot of my primary fuel map when I get home tonite. I shouldn't call it my work, this is a starting point Dave Hall sent me.

Timing is unchanged, boost is unchanged (I increased targets, but, left WDC the same, as expected, didn't hit targets). Temps were in the high 50s with humidity in the 80% range.

Here are my observations:

1. Unlike the v1.04 programming, my EGTs do not drop under heavy throttle, and then start to climb. They increase steadily from cruising 1300-1400f, and peak at 1550f (3rd gear pulls). Even coming into work today, 3rd gear at 4000 rpms would show 1400f. Does this seem normal? Is this just the results of a non-super rich primary fuel map?

2. Doing an extended 4th gear pull, I can get my EGTs to be 1550f, however, something strange happens: When the throttle closes, I get a brief surge in EGTs, I saw 1650f at one point. It drops very quickly though.

Is this unburnt fuel in the exhaust burning up? What would cause this?

Your EGTs are similar to mine when on the throttle, this is given that my EGT sensor is in my drivers side header close to cyl #4. It is the result of leaning things out. Should be ok, but as you already know, just watch how the car reacts to your changes

Have you looked at where in the prim fuel table you grabbing from once you let off of the gas? Maybe you are jumping to a very lean spot in the fuel table on throttle lift. This can also cause post throttle lift knock. That area in the prim fuel table may need to be richened up.

Nope, haven't even looked over the logs, but, thats a very good point. The primary fuel map is basically unchanged in many light load areas though. But, we'll see.

You may need a passenger to watch the live tracing when you lift off the throttle to know exactly where the values are being pulled from in each gear.

I'll just jam my laptop on the dash...

I haven't ever actually watched live tracing before.

Speaking of jamming the laptop on the dash. Anyone know of somewhere to get a HUD? It would make watching the dashboard and live tracing so much easier.

I've noticed in the past couple of days that my EGTs at WOT in 4th gear are too high. I am running 11.1:1 at WOT ... which should be fine ... but EGTs are starting to climb through the roof once I let 4th gear wind out. In fact, I couldn't let 4th gear wind out. I saw EGT's of 1625 and climbing so I got out of it quick. Still have to figure out WTF is going on. Things seem OK in 3rd gear (probably because third gear goes by so quickly). I'll update later after I get this figured out. But, I think it is unsafe at this point. Part of me wants to add more timing (which should decrease EGTs if the burn is still happening as it exits the exhaust port) ... but, the last thing I want to do is add timing if it is one of the cylinders running lean. That's the only explanation I have right now ... maybe one of the cylinders is running lean even though the wideband is saying 11.1:1.

Anybody have any ideas for me??

So I decided to play on the way back from lunch and I also get the EGT creep in 5th gear when I let off the throttle. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to look at the other gears. For some reason I bet 4th does the same thing. The prim fuel map I'm running is the ST StgII base. On this map, only the boost targets and WGDCs have been massaged.

I was out tonite after bumping up my WDC, I didn't see as much of the surge/creep after letting off the throttle, but, I was still seeing egts get awfully close to 1600f after a 4th gear run. There was still some creep though...

I'd be scared to try anything with extended runs.

I'm also running 23.5 degrees increasing to 30 degrees near the end of the run.

What are all of your boost curves on these runs?
