no offense but, if i had st, i'm not sure i'd be able to use another amateur's tuner's map with much confidence. mark my words, people will be blowing up eachother's motors.

Actually, you guys are wrong. Sorry - been there done this for the past 4 years of my life. Map Sharing can be negative. However, map sharing can be REALLY positive. I fully endorse map sharing and will do so when I get my Street Tuner. Why do I support Map sharing?

1) If a n00b posts their map then there is an opportunity for another person to tell them what he did wrong.
2) If an OK tuner posts their map then the n00b can learn from it.
3) If a respected tuner posts their map then many can learn from it.

Most people learn by example. I know. I've been programming ECM's for over 4 years now. I moderated a couple PROM forums where I helped teach people how to do it. Having example calibrations is one of the only ways to really learn. Now, with that said, YES - there is risk. However, if a n00b wants to run a calibration that he downloaded off the net and immediately go WOT then he's just a n00b, he is stupid, and he'll blow his motor up.

The initial thing that people must assume here is that any map posted should never be automatically run in another person's car. If a person does this and hurts their motor then the blame is fully on them.

It really is that simple. Once people accept the above statement then map sharing becomes incredibly positive. I intend to share my maps so that others can learn from what I do. Hopefully another more experienced Subaru Tuner will look at them and give me ways to improve it.

I'm thinking about creating my own Forum specifically for STi street tuner people who want to share ideas, maps, tuning thoughts, etc. I did it for years ... so, I might as well do it again but in the subaru world.

Most here are talking from a theoretical perspective. However, I have experience in this and know the pros and cons. There's a reason the DIY GM tuning world is so large and effective. Information is shared. Information = power. Experience = power. You have to learn through others that have the experience. It's Apprentice 101.

Going back to the previous statement ... if you're horny then just double up on the condoms and get your groove on.

swapping maps with expert instruction and supervision in a forum (or section of a forum) designed for the purpose is different than a "calling all hookers" approach.

btw, this is something i learned while pioneering the sexual revolution in the 60's:
when i feel the need to double-up the condoms it's usually a good indicator to double-up the bags, too. (isfh)

wolf,
very good points. I'm confident that if you, bruce, sachin, and I were all sharing maps, there would be no issues, and no misunderstandings. Since we are all cynical, mistrusting curmudgeons.

But, I can just see fast and furious Vinnie downloading a 22 psi/15:1/mega advance map and grenading his engine.

Actually I see this as a new opportunity for hackers. Posting a destructo map for all the idiots who will use it without asking the proper questions.

But in the end, I think your vision of utopia has merit and is worth a shot. All those who participate just need to remember that its a buyer beware type thing.

Ummm.. this idea has been in play successfully for a LONG time on rx7club for the Power FC.

I mean geez, even if you got a map from someone, Im sure you would be smart enough to at least CHECK IT.

you mean the same smart people who post a "what's the best bov" thread on the same page with 5 other "what's the best bov" threads and swear they searched before asking?

The cool thing about this is ....

Those people buying the BOVs are NOT the same people buying the street tuner.

Having an open forum of sharing maps will weed out the stupid people fairly quickly. An open forum with map sharing IS a positive thing. Those people who use a map without checking it (vinnie - lol) will be weeded out very quickly and made fun of on that board. The newbies will then learn what not to do really quickly. Vinnie's post of engine destruction will become a sticky post. Soon enough he will be preaching what not to do.

Last but not least, 'engine destruction due to using the wrong calibration' will not be widespread at all. They will be few and far between. Most people purchasing the street tuner know the importance of tuning and would not run any map in their car. This is just the nature of the beast. Street Tuner is expensive and 'Vinnie' is not going to pay $1100 for a Cobb ST package when he can go out and get a carbon fiber hood, a BOV, and a front lip.

I have an idea lets start with common maps like say cobb maps
stock map
stage 1 map
stage 2 map

I know almost nothing about tuning but I am sure some one in here could point out the difference in stock and stage one and explain why one makes more power then the other.

Then they could compare stage 1 and stage 2 and explain why the changes take advantage of the addition of a TBE.
