Anyone wanna trade their Street Tuner for my carbon fiber hood, BOV and front lip? (kidding)

Seriously though, if an individual is stupid enough to run some "x-treme power map" from an unknown user on an Internet forum, chances are that person is going to ruin their car eventually anyway. Maybe it will be a bogus ECU map, maybe a $5.00 chip off eBay that gives 40 horsepower, maybe driving in the snow on stock tires. The point is that most people who are using ST will know better. There will inevitably be a few that grenade their motor running an unsafe map, but there are plenty of people who already do that without the help of the ST.

Cool deal on the forums. Heck, the best solution is to just put it here on IWS. Maybe I can ask the admins? I could offer my moderation services again ... lots of experience after doing it for so many years. Another option is to literally take over the wrxhackers.com forum here:

http://www.wrxhackers.com/forums/index.php?

I can put up a file upload/download section for us to share maps. No problem.

I'll be ordering my ST the first week of May. I'll also be ordering up a bosch LSU4 WideBand sensor for use with my Buddy's Innovate Motorsports control unit. When funds permit I'll be ordering up the $149.99 LC-1.

I'm thinking about getting the Street Tuner with the PARALLEL port HASP security key. Any thoughts on this? The ST needs the COM port. The Innovate unit will have to go through a USB converter (probably an IOGear converter since it has the least problems). Seems like the parallel port HASP key option is the way to go.

Very well put WolfPlayer, I am actually surprised more people have not gotten on board sooner with this and some are actually afraid. I am definantly going to get ST myself, probably would have put it further up the mod list if I would have seen more good maps being shared. I believe in the very near future this will be a big thing.

1) If a n00b posts their map then there is an opportunity for another person to tell them what he did wrong.
2) If an OK tuner posts their map then the n00b can learn from it.
3) If a respected tuner posts their map then many can learn from it.

Most people learn by example. I know. I've been programming ECM's for over 4 years now. I moderated a couple PROM forums where I helped teach people how to do it. Having example calibrations is one of the only ways to really learn. Now, with that said, YES - there is risk. However, if a n00b wants to run a calibration that he downloaded off the net and immediately go WOT then he's just a n00b, he is stupid, and he'll blow his motor up.

The initial thing that people must assume here is that any map posted should never be automatically run in another person's car. If a person does this and hurts their motor then the blame is fully on them.

It really is that simple. Once people accept the above statement then map sharing becomes incredibly positive. I intend to share my maps so that others can learn from what I do. Hopefully another more experienced Subaru Tuner will look at them and give me ways to improve it.

I'm thinking about creating my own Forum specifically for STi street tuner people who want to share ideas, maps, tuning thoughts, etc. I did it for years ... so, I might as well do it again but in the subaru world.

Most here are talking from a theoretical perspective. However, I have experience in this and know the pros and cons. There's a reason the DIY GM tuning world is so large and effective. Information is shared. Information = power. Experience = power. You have to learn through others that have the experience. It's Apprentice 101.

Going back to the previous statement ... if you're horny then just double up on the condoms and get your groove on.

If you would like me to create a sub forum for custom maps / sharing let me know. Send me a PM with a title, forum description, and a list of people you think would be good to moderate it. I'm all for it.

Just keep in mind IWSTI is not responsible for any damage done to your car after you download a map off the forums

I think map sharing can be a great tool. Just look at the people on the Cobb forums....they have already been sharing maps. People can learn from each other on what they can and can't do. Just remember that the ST in not a toy, and you can do some serious harm to your engine. Take everything with a grain of salt, and you should be fine. Always ask questions, and check the map before running it. I've already shared a map with someone, but I checked the map out THROUGHLY before running it on my car, and it works great. The car flat out flys!!!

I hope more people will get into the mix and share files. This was why Cobb made this feature for the ST...we are a community of enthusiasts who help each other.

Wolf - I think the parallel port HASP key is a bad idea - unless, that is, you like being relegated to antique laptops forever. Parallel ports are not available on modern laptops anymore and even docking stations are dropping them now in favor of USB. Simply get a small 4-port USB hub if you're short on USB ports on your laptop. Then get a handful of USB <--> RS232 adapters for devices that still require RS232 COM ports. This is how I'm simultaneously running ST to the ECU, HASP, USB mouse, and LM-1 on my laptop. Works fine.

I, too, am stongly in support of teaching/learning through sharing maps. I'd never load anyone else's map, but I'd sure pore over them to try to understand what they are doing and ask lots of questions.

I'm baselining my ST Stg 2-91 on Tarmac-USA's dyno tomorrow. Will post.

Midlifecrisis,

Thanks a lot for the advice. I appreciate it. That is exactly what I will do. Thanks again! Can't wait to get my Street Tuner.

hmm, well here's a crazy question: since the street tuner just produces maps for the AP to read and then flash onto the ECU...can those without street tuner download and flash posted maps? It seems like Cobb would have prevented that somehow, but figured I'd ask the question.
