most would say....
1st.....Cosworth
2nd Axis/Cobb
3rd Crawford
4th Gruppe S (just because they're newest to the aftermarket subie game)

alot of people talk S heeit on crawford engines....im sure they're fine...but im sure some other folks will chime in on this pro and con Crawford.

Actually, Cosworth is the newest to the Subie market. The bottom line is a crappy tuner, or a sudden malfunction, can grenade any one of these motors. I'm not sure you can really rank them - there are just too many variables (eg, intended use, tune, mods, etc.) to be able say "this one" is the best. Even a couple of cosworths have grenaded, and one of them was in the hands of one of the best tuners in the country - they still don't know what really happened and it's been months...it's really tough to lay blame when all the "evidence" gets hammered into lots of little bits 'n pieces.

Im actually in the process of looking into buying a new engine now, and there are so many different advantages to each of these companies. I have read alot of bad things about crawford , but also a ton of good things. They have some of the largest selection of different setups and the prices are pretty reasonable. Yes i know this doesnt make them great however. Im really having a hard time choosing

I just get nervous with crawford and cobb engines when all they state is things like crawford forged pistons in them. So its like ok who made the pistons who made the rods. No name brands they just associate there name with those parts.

AR Fab gets my vote. Crawford might make a nice motor for you, but from what i've seen their customer service is terrible.

it's really a tough choice....think of this.

Most of them have a stg 1 engine that just consists of a new engine, with forged pistons...that's it. They are drop in's, factory replacements. All they do it pop the stock pistons out, put forged ones in. they don't split the block, they don't set the P2W clearances...nothing. You may have good luck with this combo....you may eat oil like a leaking diesel. It will have ZERO effect as to what company you choose, as long as they don't break a ring or something, installing the pistons. These engines will be the same, if the CR and all else are equal.

Then they offer a stg2....this usually gets more involved, more expensive, and they usually end up splitting the block.....adjusting the P2W clearances, bearing clearances, and possibly balancing etc.....

The stg2 engine is the minimum *I* would start at.

clearances, clearances, clearances are the key.

There are lots of companies you can go with. But with some quite public PR disasters surrounding crawford engines and improperly sized / installed pistons, I would try a different company. I still think its funny that people just drop pistons into these engines. On domestics you pretty much have to do a .030" over boar on the cylinders so that the new pistons and rings seal properly on a fresh wall surface. All I can think of is maybe suby blocks have thin walls so over boars are not a good idea. But this seems highly improbable considering how beefy the rest of the car is (with exception to the stock endlinks).

Nonsense - Crawford uses CP pistons, Cobb and Cosworth both use JE pistons, and I dunno what Ron currently uses. Just pick up the damn phone - every single one of these guys will tell you who manufactures their parts - it's not the secret you make it out to be.
