Right, but the Crawford pistons are made to their specs, which is where the whole "bobblehead" thing came from. CP pistons are fine, but the Crawford specs weren't ideal.

IMO, find your tuner then ask them who to get your motor from. You may not need much more than forged pistons, in which shopping for pistons is just as important as the builder. Again, consult a tuner first.

werd...I am unsure whether the restraint is from thin cylinder walls or from the heads. How large of a cylinder can a USDM sti head accept?

ARFab FTW! Give Howard a call and experience the knowledge. One phone call will blow your mind with info. In house service for all components and I personally have been in the shop many times and the people, tools, and equipment are all top-notch.

This was never, at least in my opinion, determined to be the problem. Remember, the "bobblehead" issue was ultimately about excessive P-SW clearance, not necessarily piston skirt length or piston offset. Furthermore, I've seen pictures of several sets of "Crawford" CP pistons and off-the-shelf CP pistons, and they looked identical to me. IMO, that whole debacle was much more likely the result of a failure to properly borematch the pistons, or other assembly mishap.

Just my $0.02.

If I were having the 5.0 in my Mustang built, I'd have someone local do it. I can't imagine that Subaru engines are such special pieces of machinery that I couldn't do the same thing. Cobb, Gruppe-S, Crawford, etc, may all be perfectly reputable places, but if my only way to interact with them is by telephone or email, I would be inclined to take my business elsewhere. Because I live in Oregon, I'd probably have PDX Tuning do it. That way if anything happens, I can go directly to them for a proper fix. Something tells me that pretty much every decent sized city has multiple qualified Subaru engine builders.

The only problem with that is PDXTuning doesn't build motors - they contract out. Same problem amigo, they're just tuners and assemblers. I'm not saying they won't try to work with you when there are problems, but they can only do so much when things go south with other people's work. I've been down this road with them and I've spent close to $10K with those guys, so I think I'm qualified to voice my observations.

Frankly, that problem is endemic to the entire industry, so I'm certainly not singling anyone out here. I don't care which gold plated engine builder you hire, if there's a problem with the motor, you're gonna eat the R&R labor at a minimum...it's just the way it is. If you can't afford that, you shouldn't be in the game.

Well for someone like me who is just window shopping right now I was just saying that if these parts are reputable pieces then why not say cp or je pistons made to cobb specs or crawford specs. For someone like me who is not in the market at this moment for a new engine it would be one of those points where I would be like oh yeah I remember such and such said they use JE pistons and I am very comfortable with there product so I will purchase a engine from them. Thats all I am saying. Yeah I coudl find out buy calling but why call them up and kick tires when I know they would rather deal with someone who is ready to do business.

Ok to clear up why I made the comment about I wonder why they just say pistons made to there specs or rods to their specs this is what I am use to seeing.

A friend of mine bought this engine for his dragster 3 or 4 years ago.

As you can see all the parts in this reher morrison engine are listed by name. It is just what I am use to seeing since all my friends are not interested in foreign cars. It is just like when you order a camshaft say from Crane cams out of a summit catalog you want to know valve lift, duration anything its all already listed. So like I said its just what I am use to seeing is all I am not puttting down the integrity of their ability to assemble a motor or anything for me it is just nice to see things like that listed when spending that kind of money for an engine. And yes I do know this is a listing for a complete motor oil pan to carbuerator thats why there are mroe parts listed compared to the shortblock engines we always see advertised. It was just my best way to explain my point. Not trying to start a debate just saying what I noticed is all.

BruceChapman thats a good idea actually. Just a good way to maybe get a little more info out there for people thank you.

Just on a quick note here before you guys bash me on this one to I just looked at a Gruppe-s engine for the first time on their website they do list who made the pistons and rods and even why they chose those parts for their engines. Thats the type of advertising I like to see. Gives you all the details.
