Regardless...I'll throw my $.02 again on how knowledgeable Ron at Axis is and that he does quality work second to none.

Ron really knows his stuff. I wouldn't have anybody else do my engine build.

This was a great engine. I really would have liked to keep the car and try to make some crazy power with an even bigger turbo. It wasn't a money thing that made me sell it. It was a time thing. We have an 18 month old boy and we will be having another kid soon. I need a reliable daily driver and not a project car. Hence the sale of the MY04 and the purchase of the MY07. Mods will be minimal on the MY07.

Normally, Pauter rods are used on his blocks. He does offer the option of using Oliver rods too though. I chose Oliver rods because they are just as strong/good as Pauter rods, but Oliver rods are lighter.

Did you have your heads upgraded with the AXIS Stage 3 block? I've been reading up on short blocks and see many positive feedbacks from AXIS. The Stage 3 block is what I'm looking at.

No significant head work. I only had upgraded valve springs and a mild three angle valve port.

Axis Power Racing stg III engine
Built EJ257
-CP forged pistons with Swain Tech coat
-Oliver forged rods
-Clevite rod bearings
-Axis modified crank balanced/blueprinted with 8500 RPM rev limit
-ARP head studs
-Kelford cams
-STi RA valvesprings
-OEM STi heads & head gaskets
-OEM STi sleeves

Very nice. I may have to used your build as a reference

Did you rev it up till 8500 or what your tuner recommended?

I revved to 8K a couple times right after breakin when I was only running wg spring pressure (1 bar). The engine was nice and SMOOTH even up that high.

Once I got it tuned at Buschur the rev limit was set at 7200. On the next planned tune we were going to set the limiter at 8200. I sold it before that tune though.

If I ever get a built engine again it will be a replica of this one. This engine with a twin scroll GT30R or GT35R would be unreal...

Between the lighter pistons, rods, and the lighter clutch/flywheel I was using, this thing revved alot quicker than stock. It was awesome.

I am planning to do a similar set-up, but with the Full_Race GT30R kit. Twin scroll goodness . I also want to add the CF Driveshaft.

I've toyed with the idea of the AXIS stage 3 + Cosworth heads, because I don't know of a reputable mechanic/machinist that can work on the stock heads. Shoot, injection is still in the picture.

Thanks for the info. It's helping me plan for the future....waaay future. LOL.

^^^

just got a used stage 3 - picked it up for 1800. I'm having it torn down, 1 piston/rod replaced, and re-honed...

Wish we could get an update on how mileage effects the engine ride... sounds like a rock solid build - +1 for Ron and Axis, he's been really helpful with replying to my emails and answering questions regarding the block.

jelphree - I'm considering doing the exact same thing with the heads - either the cosworth or cobb... I'm still waiting on someone to host a suby 'head flow' competition... - the turbo I'm pairing up with the engine will be a variant of the CP32R with a custom up-pipe/downpipe combo. Everything's laid out ready to install, just waiting to return from Iraq!!! haha.

----If you know if the current owner of the STi this thread is based on, could you forward him this link? thanks

kory

I might send him a PM and ask him how the car is doing...

With proper tuning and maintenance, the engine should hold up a very long time. This is one of the first questions I asked Ron before deciding what block I wanted. I was fearful that a built engine might only last 20K - 30K miles. He indicated that his stg III could go 100K or more, just like an OEM engine, if it was maintained properly, tuned properly, and used on a daily driver (so in other words not full out power constantly like a race engine - obviously those don't last 100K miles since they are stressed so badly). So with DD and an occasional track day the engine should last quite a while.

Just letting you know in case you wanted to weigh pros/cons of one more shop to Cobb and Cosworth. Axis does headwork too. He can do pretty much anything.

Kory, so what turbo did you settle on exactly? Is it the exact turbo they offer with their kit (straight up GT32 I think) or did you customize it with a larger compressor wheel?
