Default short block with rotated kit

i have done a lot of research and reading, but still have grey areas... i have plans on a build, but where i have hazey area is the short block...
my engine as 12k on it. im stage 2 protune(at 1000 mi)
i plan to go with cp 30r and run a race map beside my dd 91 map.

now do i need to buy an entire short block? or do i just need to buy the new short block internals?
im looking at crawford's S3L-I short block/crawford's S3L-I Rotating Assembly.
any help would be appriciated.thnx

Thumbs up Re: short block with rotated kit

I'm on the verge of doing the same with upgrades (maybe still debating).
With the 30r you could get away with drop in forged pistons for the internals. Depending on how much power you'll see on race map, the rest of the bottom end should hold up.

You can re-build your motor and be just fine for many miles. There have been plenty of threads on this. If you want to build your motor right means splitting the block and having 100mm pistons custom fit into the block. You take your pistons and your block to the machine shop and tell them to bore the block to fit the pistons. Can you be without your car for 2-3 months(realistic time frame) or do you need it in back in a week or two. Those are some questions you have to ask yourself.

ya i would need it back pretty quick... im ust trying to see wut is the best way to....do i need to spend the money on the short block or can i do the internals, which is cheaper...just trying to figure out wut is best

edit: i re read what said, and is more clear now. i think or my situation in needing the car back fairly quick i should go with the short block set up vs tearing the block down. ok. thnx for ur input

Just do some drop in pistons, but make sure they hone the block to match and you'll be fine.

Depending on how much power you are looking for on the 30r the other option is don't mess with it at all. Run the stock bottom end. 30r is about a 400-425hp turbo on pump, if thats all your planning on making then don't open the motor at all, there is no need. I ran 400+hp on my stock block for 30k with no issues at all.

Its ALL about the tune!

yea im aiming for 400awhp on pump and around 450+ on 100
and yes tune is the most important part...but i want this to last, i have 12k miles and i want more than 30-50k miles....i think my only option is to go with a short block...and eventually make this car full track someday so i think ima just do it all at once...its what im leanng twards...but more input is much appriciated from everyone

Leave the bottom end...it will last a long time on the right tune with that kind of power!

if you go full track..THEN put the shortblock in it. Why tear down a 12k motor that will easily last you another 30k miles?

Its not like you already have the motor out to do the turbo kit...you won't even be touching it.

Thats what I would do...I am sure everyone has there view on it.

Remember...forged motors blow up too

Like I said earlier if you need the car back pretty quickly getting a new short block is the only way to go. If you had everything you needed when you started(you wont, even though you think you do) you could pull the motor, break it down, build up the new short block and put it back in in 2-3 days depending on how good you are(or your shop is) and how hard you work on it(or how hard your shop works on it). If all you are doing is getting a basic built shortblock it will be 2500-3000 for the shortblock. If you were to re-build the one you have you can count on about 800-1000 in labor and 300 or so in machine shop fees plus the 500-1000 for pistons(depending on what you get and any coatings you throw on). So really the pricing is pretty good on most basic shortblocks when you figure you now have a new block, crank, and rods. If you are not going to go past 400-450 WHP a basic stage 1 short block is about all you need.

right. this makes sense... but like said above... could i or would it be wise to go rotated now and wait to put a new short block in? my biggest thing is not that the bottom will or will not hold it, many many guys have done it and do it (hold 400+awhp) but my main thing is, for how long? of course that depends on many things, and yea tune is big big part. im just trying to find recamendations from experianced people/shops on going with 400+awhp on stock block and later build or 400+ with short block at same time.....i hope im making sense here
