Default Professionals please chime in

Is there a reason why I cant do this correctly myself? My plan is to buy a brand new OEM short block. Remove the pistons and rods. Replace the rods and pistons with upgraded units. Swap short blocks.

I am thinking of going with a set of CP pistons and Pauter rods. Any input will be greatly appreciated. If your only input is "thats impossible" "don't do it" "your stupid" or anything like that with no further explanations, well I'm professional enough to tell myself these things.

I would say go for it.
If you trying to save money then it's not worth it.(most of the people pay way more in the long run)
If you looking for sense of accomplishment then you do not have a choice, but to do it yourself.
As a build all you have to do is know how to properly gap the rings have couple of tools(12mm thin wall 12 point socket, 14mm 12 point socket, 10mm alen, 14mm alen, and some other basic tools)
Do you know how to do a timing belt?
Do you know how to remove cam sprocers?
Do you know what gaskets have to be replaced?
Why are you want to go with CP pistons and Pauter Rods?

Thanks for your reply Artie.
Not really concerned with money, I just like to do as much of the work on my car as I possibly can.

As far as tools, if I don't already have something I need well that just means its time to buy it.

Yes I do know how to do timing belts. I have not done one on a Subaru, but I have on a 2nd gen eclipse which was a total pain. I have also done one on a 240sx, very simple. No issues with either one.

I do not know how to remove the Subaru cam sprockets, but that's what my factory service manual is for, right?

Yes I do know what gaskets need to be replaced.

Well CP and Pauter seem to both be prestigous brands with good (well as good as any other) track records in Subarus.

If I am wrong in any of my statements/assumptions please feel free to correct me. If inevitly (sp?) I do this, and screw it up well I'm just out some time and money. If I get it right, well I can say I did it myself. I just didn't know if any of the builders had to machine anything when they are using all brand new parts.
James
