Default Gt65 Build

What do you guys thinks about a built motor including everything but head, and valvetrain work on a 07 sti with a gt65 kit + hydra + hydramist + all supporting mods? Engine will have cosworth pistons, rods, Cosworth cams, main and rod high performance bearings, everything but head and valvetrain work, but will have new springs and retainers. Will the stock heads/valvetrain make my engines life shorter? Is the engine perfectly fine without head/valvetrain work?

Itll be sweet but expensive. You can do it with a stock head, but if you build the heads, you will get more power obviously, at more cost.

If you can afford it, do it, if not, dont.

Porting, polishing and a valve job are a personal preference some people see the benefit of it, others dont. Also, have the heads gone over to make sure the guides and seals are all good, I have seen several 07 STI's with loose valve guides. One is probably going to have to have the motor pulled back out of the car to have the heads checked out. You basically are doing valve train work without replacing the valves, everything else will be new if you are doing cams, springs, and retainers. Valves are inexpensive, in the grand scheme of a full motor build. Head porting, polishing, and valve jobs, however gets expensive quick.

thanks^ I already bought everything but now I am saving up for install and im almost there. The motor will be completely built besides the heads, and valvetrain. Im not really trying to make more power, so I guess ill leave the stock heads and stock valvetrain. I was just concerned about the engine running healthy. If it will still run just fine without built heads, and valvetrain then thats what I will do.

and yes it just keeps getting more and more expensive, its hard to stop. one thing leads to another. every dime i make goes to my car!

For valves I will have springs and retainers (Cosworth). Are the heads fine stock with A built motor, Gt65 kit Hydra+Hydramist.

In all reality you are not going to have a stock valve train, you need to understand that. The only thing that will be left from your stock valve train is the valves since you are swapping the cams and springs. Doing valves would cost around 400-500 dollars depending on what you went with. Also, please take the heads to get them checked over when you have them off the car for loose valve guides, for some reason the 07's are really susceptible to this straight from the factory.

To make sure I'm reading this right, you plan to run the stock intake and exhaust valves?

  • I am going to be running a big rotated turbo setup. (Element Gt65 kit) I will be around 500whp give or take on pump+meth. Just wondering everyone's thoughts on my setup, and how solid it is? I am debating getting the heads done, but my engine builder says they dont usually do the heads on a street car. By street car I mean canyon runs often, and many track days, but I have a daily driver. Is my engine ok without heads? By keeping the heads stock am I making the turbo work harder? My car will be used on the street as well as the track. Going to try and hit the track up 2 times a month, but I drive through the canyons often and around the street when I feel the urge. If my engine is perfectly fine and doesn't need headwork then but if its just stupid to have all this done and not even a mild p&p then I wouldnt mind dishing out the extra cash. Just wondering if the stock heads with this kind of setup is detrimental. 2007 Subaru Impreza STI

The build looks VERY solid for your setup. You don't necessarily need to do any work to the heads, your motor is going to flow really well. But if you have an extra grand or so laying around collecting dust I would at least get a mild port/polish. I would also suggest replacing your OEM intake and exhaust valves while the motor is apart. Phil Grabow stressed this issue when W1 and Phil were doing my build.

Do the headwork. Trust me. My motor has to pulled again for headwork now. The same cylinder that went toasted a valve as well.
