Sure they will help, it just depends on what your definition of alot means. Cams will help the head breathe more by opening the intake and exhaust valves wider. This will generally leads to an increase in HP and TQ throughout the entire rpm range.

Nice sig I have any evo you can race

you can easily get 500+ hp out of the stock cams.

Yup, cam's do increase VE at a cost of (usually) a loss of area under the curve (atleast on a stock motor). Usually, they shift the powerband to the right causing and increased boost threashold. Who really wants that?

There are 100x better ways to spend money on your car, than the 1K for cams.

on the other hand, there comes a time in the development of your project when you are ready to turn your attention to the heads. if you have the motor out of the car, at the very least you want to upgrade your springs and retainers, even if you do nothing else.

if you want to do more than springs and retainers, you might be tempted to go overboard with other headwork. on a strip dedicated car you can go nuts. however, if you are streeting the car, as modaddict points out, you can move the powerband way too far to the right and end up ruining your fun factor on the street.

my car is my dd but it also has serious track intentions, so it really has been a balancing act. if you are streeting it i would port match everything on the intake and exhaust sides and just clean up the flow with a mild p&p. i would avoid more extreme work. likewise with your selection of cams. you've got choices in avcs cams from kelford and dpr (cosworth cams are kelfords). after consulting with my engine builder, (jeremy at cobb) i settled on kelford stg 3 avcs cams with a custom grind (lift: .413; duration: 232; lobe separation: 113 degrees). i am hoping i don't end up wishing i had a little less cam. i guess we'll find out.

This is not really the right question because a lot more goes into engine building then swapping the cams. What I mean is that if you are using the stock turbo your gains will be a lot less then an engine running better heads, and a large turbo. Cam tuning moves the power curve on a dyno up and to the right, but since cams don't make as big a difference as the turbo, your gains are largely going to be based on whether your cam timing is well matched to your engine and turbo combination. STIs, unlike evos, don't make large power gains with just cams (compared to say, swapping turbos, the cost equivalent) because our turbos and heads don't have as strong a top end from the Factory. Were it my car, I would do a turbo swap before a cam swap and wait till I was replacing the engine before doing a cam swap.

On the track it won't matter, and on the street you won't know unless you put your butt in another similar, "less cammed" car back-to-back. My hunch is once the burner kicks in, you'll be happy.
