Default Hawk HP+ Pads

I searched but found that most people just have the Hawk HPS pad. Who has run the HP+ pads as their full time pad (street and track) and what have you experienced with them?

Thanks,
Mark

I've used HP+ pads on the track and street but on a 2002 WRX. I don't believe I've run them on the STi yet.

They're an adequate track performer (I run in the Advanced groups) and they're fine on the street. Of course, I don't mind brake squeal one bit. in fact, I kind of chuckle about it.

If I remember correctly, they're anything but quiet.

Hope this helps.

I run them on the street - 06 wrx w/ 4 pots.

Squeal seems to come and go depending on the weather and how hard I use them (they got quiet after last auto-x)

They are always dusty...

You will hate street pads after getting used to them

If you commute in a lot of stop and go or want to impress the locals at the Dunkin Donuts they might not be the best choice - but feedback on STi's and EVO's says that just about any pad will make some noise - if that is in fact the case then I'd at least rather have some good brakes if they are going to be loud. They are a bit cheaper than the Ferodo DS2500's.

I don't commute with the car, it's mainly a "weekend toy". How badly will they eat up rotors around town?

Without bringing cost into the equation, Ferodo DS2500 vs HP+? Isn't the HP+ the more street oriented pad?

BTW, WRXBrakes, you have PM

Thanks,
Mark

Since I've used the HP+ pads on the street and on the track (using the same set of rotors) it's impossible for me to tell which caused more rotor wear without taking very precise measurements. For example it's hard to tell which is harder than the other -500 track miles or 5,000 street miles.

When people talk about a particular pad being hard on rotors, I don't think it necessarily means the rotor's life was cut by 50%. It might mean a 20 or 25% reduction, but in the big scheme of things that's not a big deal in my opinion.

I prefer having a more aggressive pad that offers shorter stopping distances and higher resistance to fading to one that offers less noise and dust along with longer stopping distances.

upncummr: Are you still on the stock rotors? How many miles have you gotten out of them? I too have no problem with dealing with dust and squeal to get better performance, it's just that I don't want to be changing rotors every time I change pads.

I'm not in a position to answer that specific question because I haven't been using HP+ pads on the STi (the STi only has 6,000 miles on it by the way).

When I was running the HP+ pads on the WRX, I was changing rotors once a year (or less), but brake pads maybe 4 or 5 times due to driving schools.

I'm making an uneducated guess here (WRXBrakes would be able to give you an educated guess).....if stock rotors would last 35,000 to 40,000 miles using stock pads, the stock rotors will last 25,000 to 30,000 miles using the HP+ pads.

(I hope someone will chime in with a different opinion or experience if they know more about this than I do.)

HP+ will wear rotors faster than a ceramic street pad - but I've seen the STi stock pads to generate a pretty mean lip prettty quickly.

If I were to suppose - rotor wear wouldn't be a significant concern with HP+ - they should definitely outlast the pads - I'd say 2 to 1 as a very general guess.

I think that's a very reasonable guess -

It's extrememly hard to predict - there are just so many factors that come into play.

A track day will accelerate pad wear very rapidly - tons of extremely cold weather would likely accelerate rotor wear somewhat. Those are general 'guidlines' to consider.
