Default Those of you who drive to the track...

I'm driving to VIR (it's 140 miles away) and i'm just curious for some input here...

Do you bed in the pads you're going to use for your track day, then just drive the car to the track?

Do you bed in the pads you're going to use, then put the stock pads back on, then change them after you get to the track (to avoid streed driving)?

It depends on how much of a hurry I'm in. Sometimes I just throw on my track pads and drive there, sometimes I put them on when I get there. I've found that the higher friction track pads don't really need to be bedded in every time because they take off the street pad material on my rotors very quickly, so after a few hard stops they are good. It's when I switch back to my street pads that I really need to bed them in.

At StopTech, we always install our track pads a day or so ahead of time, not only from a convenience standpoint (much more pleasant to change pads at home) but as a way to prep the rotors for a thorough bed in the night before the track day. Track pads are abraisive when cold will clean the street pad transfer layer from the rotors when driven at low temperatures around town. By having a clean rotor surface to bed in your race pads, you reduce the chances of having issues with vibrations and incomaptible pad materials. Its also a good idea to leave track pads on for a day or so after the track to clean off the rece pad material and prep the rotors for a bed in cycle for your street pads again. Most track pads are driveable on the street but tend to be very dusty and noisy and are sometimes lacking in cold bite making the first few stops in the morning...interesting.

This recommendation is true for most race pads like Hawk HT10, HT14 and DTC70, PFC01 and PFC97 and Ferodo DS3000. It is not recommended for something like Hawk Blue 9012 which are super abraisive when cold and can literally wear out a set of rotors in a matter of days. Hawk blue would be best installed the night before and be bed in at the track.

thats the way i do it, sometimes I'll install and bed them in the night before, but i always do it before I'm at the track... you'll have enough stuff to do when you get there.

will you be at the march NASA event?

i'm running pagid blacks. still the same advice? leave 'em on for a couple o' days afterwards? sorry, should have said this in the original post. i have a lip on the rotors, as well. not much (between 1/32 and 1/64 or so?)

im wondering if common convention is to turn the rotors before bedding in a track pad. it's pretty inconvenient. duh. btw, my azenis are burnin' a freaking hole in my floor, waiting for some nice temps to get mounted

no need to turn rotors....track pads are abraisive enough to act like an on car brake lathe to a degree and can even be used to remove uneven pad deposits if and when they develop if they are aggressive enough:

I usually put them on and bed them in the night before. I don't think it matters much since a couple of hot laps will probably do more than a few hard street stops. I also don't think driving 280 miles on the street (both ways) with track pads will bother the rotors much.

When you say Pagid blacks are you talking the 421's or the -14's? cause there's a huge difference.

Driving back from VIR after last weekend w/ HT-10's on my brakes sounded like a brake lathe.

I was definitely worried about my purty new rotors but after I got home I saw no problems.

I believe they are the 4-2-1's. they're still 3 days away from me, so unfortunately i can't verify 100% but i'm pretty sure that's what they are.

I can't tell from reading the pad characteristics, are the 4-2-1's more or less aggressive than the pagid blue's people keep raving about? Which is a higher performance pad? Do "pagid blues" mean RS-5 or RS-4-2?

Moot point i guess, since it doesn't really apply to me now, but for future reference... nothing wrong with that.

YOu probably got the 4-2-1's. The Blues are the 4-2's and are a little more aggressive than the Blacks. The Blacks are more of an all-purpose pad, while the Blues are a track pad that can be used on the street due to its wide temperature range.
