Default lips on the outer edge of the rotors

i started to notice the "lips" on the outer edge of the rotors on all 4 rotors. i took it in to subie stealership today and i was told that i'm at 28mm for the front rotors and 18 mm for the rear, which are supposedly barely within the service limits.

standard for front rotors: 30mm, service limit: 28mm
starndard for rear rotors: 20mm, service limit: 18mm

so the question is, at what point can i get the rotors replaced? the gold warranty i bought seems to be a joke. pic attached.

You don't need to replace them... You can machine them down... for street use, a little less meat is not a big deal... even for light track use.

well do you want to pay to turn the rotors now and then replace them next brake service, or do you want to upgrade rotors now? It's mostly your call - if you want to turn them and aren't planning on any serious track use, you'll be fine with a turn. However, if you are paying for all the brake work because you're outside of the 36000 mile warranty, then you might want to think about upgrading for a similar or less cost than the stock brembo stuff.

Sti oem rotor can't really be turned because turning them just once will make them go below the limit.
If they feel like they are getting swirl mark, get some sand paper and lightly sand them down in a orbital pattern.
Your rotors look ok. The lip on the outer edge is normal.

Your fronts are already below spec to be replaced under warranty. 28.1 is the limit. Anything below that and Subaru has to replace them under the 36K mile warranty. Mine were just replaced 1-2 weeks ago.

that's what i was thinking, but the mechanic there doesn't think so. i want to get them replaced, since my warranty is still good for 3 years/36000 (mine has been 2 years 3 months/23000 miles) god, these f*cking subie stealerships suck...

Talk to the service manager at your dealership. Hopefully they will take care of you.

i did talk to the service coordinator, and he has to depend on the what the mechanic says. the bottomline is, the part needs to be justifiably in bad shape to send in for warranty. i thought my rotors were already bad.

Justifiably bad? They are below spec. And regardless they have worn enough - you are under 36,000 miles, which the warranty specifies your brakes are covered for one change.

not only that, but i just remembered that they (Gerald Subaru of North Aurora, IL) replaced my rear brake pads with a set of new brake pads, without resurfacing the rear rotors. is this a bad practice or what?

No, that is not bad at all. You can put new pads on an older rotor with out a problem.

oh really? last time I checked it depended on the condition of the rotors.

It does - if the rotor has taper wear than the pad won't seat well.

But that's unlikely to be a problem with Brembo's.

Yes, if the rotors are warped, or glazed, then they should be turned, but that needs to be done weather you are putting new pads on or not.
