As of yesterday I can hear a grinding noise coming from the rear of my car when braking at low speeds. I had a scheduled oil change @ the dealer today anyway, so I had them inspect the problem.

Who can guess what they said?????????????

Dealership: Mr. Buffalo Brent thank you for selecting as the Subaru dealership to serve your car. We are always happy to provide our customers with the best customer service in the business. We understand that you reported hearing "a grinding noise coming from the rear" of your vehicle at low speeds. We are happy to report that we were able to sucessfully reproduce this. However, we regret to inform you that your warranty does not cover this because we have concluded that this "grinding" is the result of abusing your car. We were able to determine that you have been racing your car. We are sorry. Oh, and you owe us $XXX to cover our time and expense in diagnosing this issue for you. We hope you come back real soon. Please go to the register and see the women there to get your keys and pay for the services provided to you by our dealership. Have a nice day.

you have brembo high performance brakes at all four corners. when you first start moving, when you first start moving in reverse, when you first apply the brakes, when you first apply the brakes after not using them for awhile, or when it is cold outside you will hear a loud screeching, grinding noise until the pads, brakes are warmed up. price you pay for performance. i usually tap on them or feather them gradually until warmed up.
but i guess i'll bite. what did they say?

That's funny

That would have been my 1st guess also.

But my second guess would have been correct which is.....

Dealership: we inspected the brakes and found nothing wrong.

Brent: Well i have had just about every type of brake pad imaginable at one point or another, and none of them made grinding sounds unless they were worn to nothing.

Dealership: well these are high performance brakes, it is normal to sound like metal on metal grinding.

Brent: Well, how come it didn't sound like grinding until yesterday ?

Dealership: We inspected the brakes and found nothing wrong, thank-you, come again.

you may just now worn off the greases of packing/intalling left over on the brakes. if you search around every thread of an sti owner complaining about the screeching of the brakes it will make more sense

That is too good. My former dealer also gave me the speech but not as politically correct. Him "You know you don't have any warranty, right?" I then asked him why. Him "You have a boost controller". The funny thing is that I don't have and have never had a boost controller. I told him that there is no boost controller. He had to go call someone and then came back and said they still were not going to warranty it unless thay got to drive it. That was the last Suby dealer service for my car unless the body rusts through.

now that's just ridiculous. if there was any "grease" on the pads OR rotors, the pads are instantly garbage. once you get anything like brake fluid, oil, or grease on brake pads, you gotta install new ones.

Indeed. . . but there's usually a glaze on them, is there not? When they're new?

At any rate, the sound IS normal. Some people laugh when I back up and mine squeal. . . but they're Brembos, they're hardcore, and I like the squeal.

It IS normal. If you look at your brakes after any sort of extended parking they have spots from the pads. It takes a few stops to grind the rust outline of the pads off the rotors. It did bother me the first time I heard it, but after inspecting the brakes, that is my conclusion.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your dealer did the right thing IMO.
