Default Brembo Racing Pads (RB-170)

Hey guys,

I was searching around the brembo website for some pads and came across this catalogue.

http://www.brembo.com/NR/rdonlyres/A...lieRacing1.pdf

Looks like Brembo has some "racing" pads but they really don't give any information as far as what the stock pads are and how these compare to them?

Do any of the vendors on this site have any clue what these pads are (just track or street/track like the sports) and how much these go for?

I would really appreciate the feedback.

How did you log in to that page?

They are re-boxed pads from another manufacturer.

Really?? I found the repacked one from Ferodo and Pagid in another catalog but this was something else. Here is the link to the catalogue.

Brembo - Racing Brake Pads

Anyhow, I emailed brembo and am going to call them as well. I need to find out what these are because I am not too happy with the aftermarket stuff I tried. I need to switch to Ferodos or something since they seem to know what the heck they are doing.

Well - I don't think Brembo started manufacturing brake pads - although they may have.

I'd suspect that they picked 'someone' to make to their spec - or something along those lines -

They make calipers and rotors - and design kits for OE and aftermarket.

Are you willing to be more specific about what pad failed under what conditions?

^^^ I didn't have any serious pad failure but I have serious NVH with aftermarket pads. I got some Carbotech bobcats and I am reusing the stock shims. However, every time my car rolls the pads BANG into the 2 pins. I think the gaps on those slots are too big. I don't think it is a problem, just a bit annoying when you are street driving. Plus, impact loading is not what I want on aluminum calipers.

I guess I was just feeling that I am buying the cheap aftermarket stuff and that I would like to try the top of the line stuff. I figured since Brembo is OEM they will have good stuff.

Ah -

This should help.

The slots on the stock pads are the same shape/size etc as aftermarket -I've compared a zillion pads.

The pins only control movement in one direction -in and out of the caliper and the anti-rattle cross springs hold the pads down or at least press down to suppress vibration etc. Fore and aft motion is controlled by steel abutment plates on the inside of the caliper body. In some calipers those plates are spring loaded to reduce the noise as you go from reverse to forward -but not yours.

The issue is the width of the backing plate on the pads.

Some pads have a cut backing plate with a flat edge - most aftermarket pads get plates from the same few plate suppliers and they are stamped. This leaves not a completely flat edge - it's turned up a bit -and is less accurate. So if this width is a bit narrow - as you go from forward to reverse the pad moves just a small amount more and you can here it when it contacts the 'other side' of the caliper. The stock pads must move too of course - there has to be room in there for the pad to move.

In some cases there is a bit of a popping noise as the pad moves - it must jostle the pins/cross springs a bit.

I've never heard of this creating a problem other than noise - and in fact my WRX w/ 4 pots/2 pots had much looser tolerances overall - the pads and pins literally fall right in as compared to Brembo's - and I had no issues other than noise - but that's certainly not to say it can't - just my experience.

So -

If you get OEM pads from Brembo - the fit will likely be a bit better. If you get race pads from Brembo - I suppose it depends on who makes them or if they are paying attention to or are even aware of the issue.

Hmmm... tx for the info man. I know exactly what you are talking about and now it is making much more sense. I never thought about that.
