Default Quick HELP!!! Loose Rotors - not bolted down? --- PROBLEM SOLVED

PROBLEMS SOLVED --> SEE POST #6
Thanks to everyone for their help!!

So I installed my GC coilovers today, and noticed something VERY weird. The rotors seem to be held in place only by the caliper! There are the 5 wheel studs aligning the rotor and making it spin, but then there are two smaller holes on the rotor that look like they should be bolted down - they're empty.

Had these professionally installed by a trusted shop that does subaru/mitsubishi tuning.

Now the weird part - went to go test out the coilovers. First time i hit the brakes (in the driveway) the pedal went straight to the floor! I pumped it once and everything seemed to go back to normal. Then, after about 100 yards of driving, a terrible grinding sound started. Grinding occurred any time the car was moving forward - didn't happen in reverse. Sounded like metal on spinning metal. If i ignored the noise though, the brakes seemed to be otherwise working just fine.

Was to dark to diagnose it tonight, so I parked it and will go back in the morning.

Any thoughts before I dive back in? Any help is appreciated.

It's normal. The studs are pressed into the Hub behind the rotor. The rotor is sandwiched between the wheel and hub.

Those two holes are used when taking the rotors off. If the rotors are being difficult, you can insert a cap screw in there and pop it off the hub.

Not sure about the grinding noise. Do they even take the brakes off to install coilovers?

was wondering the same thing...

When I installed my coilovers, the only thing related to the brakes that I touched was the brake lines connected to the suspension. Other than that, no other brake component was touched.

I would check with the shop and see what exactly their process for installing coilovers is...

Your brakes are normal. I'm a little curious as to why they went all the way to the floor on the first pump though. Did you mess with the brakes for some reason? A coilover install should not touch the brake system except to unbolt the brake line from the strut. The line should never be opened though. Sounds like you unbolted something that let out some fluid out of or air into the line. If you did, then bleed your brakes.

As far as the grinding noise goes, it does not sound to be related to the brakes. I would think more about something being improperly installed with the coilovers and thus causing the rubbing issues. Do a visual and make sure everything is clearing other parts and so on.

UPDATE!!!

Grinding noise was the inside of the rim hitting the strut...too much negative camber. Fixed that this morning.

Still not sure why the brakes went to the floor the first time, but they have been perfectly normal since then. Maybe a kink in the brake lines somewhere? Weird, but they're definitely back to normal - went for about a 50 mile drive today.

Thanks for the quick responses!!!

if the brakes are back to normal they should be fine. If you want to be extra careful i would bleed the brake system and make sure there isn't any air in there.

Def go get an alignment, and a corner balance if you really want to treat the car right.

The pads got knocked back with all the pushing and shoving and rotor movement during your install. First one or two brake pedal applications pushed them back out in contact with the rotor. This is very normal stuff, nothing to worry about. Just remember it the next time you work on the front suspension, and apply the brake pedal a couple of times before you start moving.

Got my alignment done this afternoon...man the car feels good. Full review will be coming soon.

WDB - thanks for the response about the brakes. Eases the nerves a little
