Default [SOLVED]!!! Hawk HP+...what did you say? I can't hear you! (brake squeak)

Hey all,

I bought a set of Hawk HP+'s for the front and rear of my 07. I used them for 2 track days last year, and they were MUCH better than the stock pads. (NHIS)

I put them back on the car on monday, hoping to DD on them this summer and for the autox season. I used the titanium shims front and rear, but no rubber/metal one up front.

It started to squeak, ridiculously loud.

I took the pads back out, and put CRC brake disc quiet, the tacky goo stuff, all over the backing plate of the pad, both shims, on back of shim, inbetween, caliper/pad bolts, etc, gobs of it.

Went to bed the pads in, it was VERY quiet. No squeaks at all. Now 2 days later, the squeaking is back. It's very noticable when I'm driving, and not even using the brakes, it just squeaks!

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm at the point where I cant take it anymore and will probably revert to autoxing on the stock pads. Although this weekend I have a test & tune on Saturday, and a points event on Sunday. Perhaps I'll leave them in for the weekend.

I know this has been covered a million times, but just thought I'd see if there was any new tricks people have found that works to quiet pads down.

Thanks!

Some brake pads are just prone to squeaking and HP+ are definitely in that category. After bedding in the brakes, you probably had a good transfer layer but driving around normally for a couple of days wore the transfer layer off causing the squeal to return. HP+ are fairly abrasive pads and will wear off a transfer layer pretty quickly if they arent driven aggressively.

Turn up your car stereo and/or install loud ass pipe. That's what I did.

Seriously, I love my HP+ pads because they stop the car dang hard and dust less than stock. They are noisy until heated up.....makes me drive faster and brake harder in traffic in an attempt to shut them up! I don't care....all the good mods make noise....

So not even the titanium ones? Just pads + lube/grease, and put them in?

That actually might work. Perhaps its the shims BEHIND the pads that are vibrating and not the pads themselves. Or the pads are, and they are causing the shims to vibrate more, causing squeaking.

I dont mind if they make a loud sound, like grind or breaking, but i HATE the squeak..

What kind of lube did you use? I take it you applied it to the back of the pad, and then maybe the two caliper slot bolts, and maybe the "plate"? (that holds the pads in)

thanks!

Yeah, nothing but the pad itself. I think I just bought el-cheapo brake grease. After that I broke them in with 8 hard stops from 40mph and 8 hard stops from 60mph...never completly stopping mind you. I think I followed stoptechs advice for breaking in pads.

I just put the Hawk HP+ too I did them with DBA 4000 Slotted rotors all around.. WOW they are loud dude i tried everything. I did the grease i bedded the SH*t out of them almost got into like 5 accidents doing that one.. But seriously my car is loud with the GT Spec Headers and the N1 and these things SCREAM.. When they heat up and if I am doing aggressive braking no prob a light squeal.. But stopping at a light and driving around town I just see people looking at my like damn he needs some brakes from 20mph - 0 forget about it these things are crazy loud... So its not just you its the pads.. But with that said they stop the car on a dime, once they heat up they are so aggressive i love them. So I am gonna take the noise trade offs i guess you know what can you do... Or maybe go to a Ferodo 2500 not sure if they are quiet or not?/

My experience with HP+. Stock car (I run in A/S so big Whiteline on front for autocross and big Whiteline on back for track days). My HP+ were fine until I did a track day on them. Now they squeal so bad I can't drive on them (it's huge, totally loud, kill your ears) . I used Ferodo 2500's last year which worked OK for track days but I didn't feel like I could get enough brake at autocrosses (they need a little heat) but not much squeal ever.

I love the HP+ at the autocross.

Also, just for information, I used Ferodo 3000's for track and only got 5 sessions out of them. Probably because they felt so good that I could take the car real deep without worry. That was way too expensive. I went back to the 2500's and braked a bit easier and they lasted OK (now I'm using PF 97's for track days which last long and feel good but I'm still using less brake than I could because of $$$$).

I'm back on stock fronts pads, HP+ back (they squeal but not as loud). I'll put the HP+ on front for autocross.

YMMV

Mine always make noise as long as I am not applying much pressure to them. Once I press down harder, the squeak goes away.

Mine always made noise even on other cars. Sometimes I got into the habbit of dragging htem out just to get them to squeel at stoplights. But yeah if you press down harder the squeel should stop.

Yes, I notice under harder braking they don't squeal and remain silent.

I ran at a test & tune autocross yesterday and had seat time ALL day. The pads held up great, and were awesome while out on course.
