The theme of my car and journal is weight reduction. I was formerly known as the "King of weight reduction" in my Honda days. I've always believed weight reduction is the best way to achieve better performance, because it helps in every respect - acceleration, braking, cornering, and also reduces wear due to less stress on components. My original goal when I started this journal was to get the car down to 2899 lbs with driver and 30-35L of gas. I weigh 165 lbs, 170 lbs with clothing and shoes. Therefore, the goal was roughly 2729 without driver. At the time, I thought that was achievable only by removing the passenger seat for track days, but I now think that is achievable with a fully functional interior including a stereo. The only functional things I've removed from the interior are the middle rear seat belt, the rear center pass through (CDN models came with it), sunvisors (can be added back in for road trips), grab handles, and the rear speakers.

New goal as of July 2007 is 2699 without driver and 30-35L of gas!!

Weight Reduction List

Some Notes Before I Begin
1. If you see something you weighed and disagree, PM or add to the thread and I will reweigh to confirm. I try to weigh as accurately as possible but sometimes for weird shaped items like a driveshaft, it's hard to get an accurate reading even if you put a box or milk crate on the scale and try to balance the object on it.

2. Original wet weight is 3298 lbs, therefore all reducing fluid levels (eg. gas, windshield washer fluid, intercooler sprayer fluid, coolant overflow, etc.) counts towards weight reduction. I run full brake fluid, full clutch fluid, full engine oil, full transmission oil, full differential oil, full power steering fluid, but run low gas (fill up 30L at a time only), low IC fluid, and coolant overflow on minimum. Running low engine, tranny, and diff. oil is just not worth it for obvious reasons. Running low clutch, brake, and PS fluid, although I investigated it (just have to keep checking it more often), would only result in a 0.5 lbs weight savings.

3. L = driver side for a left hand drive vehicle, R = passenger side for a left hand drive vehicle.

4. A - sign is normally used to show a weight reduction, but in cases where weight is added, a + sign is used.

5. For parts that are replaced, I put in a comparison to stock in parentheses immediately after. For example, if item X weighs 10.0 lbs and the part it replaces is 15.0 lbs, I enter the weight savings as 5.0 lbs and put (10.0 vs 15.0) in parentheses.

6. Items in italic are approximate because I forgot to weigh them for whatever reason and I may need your help to get a more accurate weight! PM me or add to the thread if you can!

L radiator fan - 4.5 lbs

Windshield washer fluid reservoir - about 12 lbs full
L upper radiator bracket - 0.5 lbs

My scale reads in 1/4 lb increments. It's fairly accurate for our purposes. I have a more accurate scale that reads in 0.1 lb increments but I think 1/4 lb increments makes things easier.

Can you give me more info on this? I removed this thin metal heat shield that was above the exhaust and sat near the two 'butts' of the gas tank. But it looks like it weighs 1lb. No where near 4-5lbs. I must not have yet removed the piece you are talking about.

Weight of my car in Oct of 2006

Weighed it on a truck scale... 2950 lbs with half a tank of gas... no driver... goal is to get it to 2899 with driver and full interior (ok, pass seat removed is ok :))... so another 211 or so lbs to go!

Let's see what I got planned:

Brakeman rotors - 20 lb savings
Lightweight wheels and tires - 30 lbs
Lightweight coilovers - 30 lbs
Rear 2 piece rotors? - 15 lbs
Spec C trunk - 15 lbs
S203 replica wing to replace STI wing - 10 lbs
No passenger seat (track only) - 35 lbs
ACT Prolite flywheel - 9 lbs

The compressor is about 10 lbs... the whole AC system is relativel light... I think about 30 lbs total... the Honda ones add about 50 lbs+ to the car... the Subaru ones are relatively weight efficient... here's another idea... if u want to have the best of both worlds, remove the belt in the fall, spring, and winter...

I also replaced the idler pulley to save 1 lb... I got a smaller belt and held the AC compressor up and tightened the bolt with my air ratchet :)...

but for winter, I am contemplating just removing the belt all together to free up a bit of HP... and I could remove the outer portion of the pulley for winter to save another 1 lb (the part with the magnets).

Stereo System
The radio is 6 lbs, but the speakers are super light. The rear speaker on my 05 STI weighed a whopping 1/4 lb... I have a digital scale in 1/4 increments... and it barely registered on the scale lol... the fronts were 1/2 lb... which is good... shows Subaru was really weight conscious with this car.

I want to replace that heavy 6lb deck though... with a lighter aftermarket unit with better performance (the regular 1 DIN size, not the double size Subaru one)... recommendations?

Battery Location
I've thought about the best location and I'm not sure right at the back is the best place... under the passenger seat would be the lowest point in the car and at least if u took the pass. seat out for track days, you'd have a 9.5 lb "passenger" lol. The back would require a lot more cable (which is heavy) and is higher up in the car and also more at the end (increasing the polar moment of inertia).

FMIC
Ah yes... to FMIC or not... that's a tough call... I decided on a WBR FMIC... it apparently weighs 41 lbs in the box, so I'm assuming 37 lbs without the packaging... 1 lb for the coolant reservoir included... so that is 36 lbs compared to 12 lbs for the stock IC and 1 lb for the brackets and hoses... so it's about 23 lbs heavier than stock... it's right at the front, but at least it's lower than the TMIC... so it sort of balances out location wise.

Washer Fluid Reservoir Removal
I've been considering this for a long time... in fact, I've been wanting to make my own coolant reservoir out of a 1L bottle (to save 1 lb from that HONKING reservoir)... I already run REALLY LOW fluid levels... that alone saves a lot of weight.. water is 2.2lbs per liter! Ok... one concern I had though... if you use the IC spray as the windshield spray, what do you fill it with? If you fill it with windshield washer fluid, is that ok for the TMIC? I guess it would be constantly cleaned! And I guess the other issue is that fluid is relatively expensive if you want to use it as IC spray... I know it's only like $4 for a gallon, but damn I go through 2L a week on the IC spray... seems "wasteful" even though it's not that much money relative to our gas and maintenance costs.

However, in the winter, you could argue you one uses the IC spray a lot less and the wiper fluid a lot more... and in the summer, the IC a lot more and the wiper fluid a lot less... so maybe fill with super diluted washer fluid in the summer and undiluted fluid in the winter.

Ok.... so I just did this mod tonight... saved 4 lbs (1 lb for the container and 3 lbs of fluid I usually carry)... it's kinda cool hitting the spray button to get the windshield washer fluid sprayed... it was fun!!

More Weight Reduction
I also removed the AC belt since it's winter... and the outer pulley with the magnets... this saves another 1 lb and is easily removed and replaced... so when summer hits, I will put it back... also removed the 2 bottom bolts for the AC compressor... this saves 1/4 lb... only 2 bolts are required to hold up that AC comp. if there is no "load" from the belt... even when I put it back on, as long as the belt is not on super tight and literally "yanking" on the compressor, I don't think more than 2 bolts are necessary... I will prob. leave them off and then monitor it for a while... if no problems come up, I will leave the 2 bolts off.

Also removed the Alternator tensioner bolt and spacer to save another 1/4 lb... simply hold up the alternator with your hand and tighten the bolt... u can get the same tension (1/4" deflection) without the tensioner... tighten up the other bolt and you're good to go... I see no reason why both bolts, if tight, will loosen enough for the alternator to slide down.. there is enough friction between the surfaces to hold it in place. The tensioner bolt is more a convenience thing... once it's in place, you tighten the other bolt to clamp it down anyways... so that tensioner bolt really doesn't do anything once everything is tight. Oh, and I replaced the clamping bolt with a shorter one to save 1/10 lb since I am no longer using the spacer.

Wow, without the AC belt, it is like lightening the crank pulley another 2 lbs... My impression is a roughly 1% improvement... with the stock pulley at 5 lbs and my COBB at 1 lb, it felt like a 2% improvement... dyno numbers have backed this up... freeing up about 6WHP... or about 2% of 300... it also felt roughly the same as ditching 60 lbs (roughly 2% of 3000 lbs) out of the car... so it makes sense that a further 2 rotational lbs less to "accelerate" would equate to a roughly 1% gain in freed horsepower.... felt very much like removing my passenger seat, which is about 30 lbs (stock is 42 but I have an aftermarket one)... or 1% of 3000 lbs.

Replacing the rad fan with a tiny 172mm x 150 mm computer fan?

This would save me 3 lbs... stock fan is about 4.5 lbs... this one is about 1.5 lb...

When out at the track, the fans never come on... with water wetter and only 10% coolant, I found it took about 10 minutes before the temperature started to rise in my honda... so I ran no fan in that car... only time I had problems was lining up to get my car aircared or waiting at the border crossing... for aircare, I put the fan back in... for waiting at the border, I sometimes had to shut the engine off... but with the constant starting and shutting off, that came close to killing my 9.5 lb battery :D ... it was quite the balancing act getting through without killing my battery or overheating my car at times... but that was for summer only... fall, spring, and winter I could get through no problem even if the border guards were searching everybody...

so the compromise I thought of is a tiny fan that could be on "all the time" when in situations like that... since the stock fan seems to come on full force for a few seconds and then go dormant for about 1-2 minutes... so in effect, I am decreasing the CFM of the fan but increasing the "duty cycle"... what do you think?

I will try to post some pics... but basically, I got a belt that was 1" shorter from my local parts store (Lordco where I live... probably Napa or autozone in the US)... it didn't quite work (really really tight) so I concluded 0.5" shorter was the correct size... I HAPPEN to have a pile of belts from my old Honda days... and one of them was a perfect fit!!! It was from the AC compressor (I think... or maybe the PS) for a 99 Civic Si.

So here is what you do:
1. Go to your local parts store and ask them what length a 05 STI uses for the AC compressor... get 0.5" smaller. It will likely be an odd size so they will probably have to order it in. Store this belt for spring/summer... you probably won't need AC until then. This will save 1 lb by not having to use the idler pulley... of which 0.25 lbs of that is rotational (unfortunately, that pulley is super light and you're not saving much... it seems to be made out of plastic or something :lol: )...

2. Now, for winter, you can save another 1 lb by removing the 3 magnets on the compressor... simply get a 5mm allen wrench (hex wrench) and loosen the screw in the center while holding the pulley in place with your other hand.. it's not on that tight so your hand holding it will be enough... it uses loctite so getting it loose will require a BIT more effort than usual, but still very easily doable without air tools or any kind of lock to keep the AC pulley still.

So that is a total of 2 lbs savings.... BUT another benefit is that without running the belt, you free up some hp that is used to drive that 2 lb pulley on the compressor (actually 3 lbs if you count the magnets).. so that is like taking 3 lbs off the crank pulley... it's almost like doing 3/4 of a lightweight COBB pulley mod since that takes out 4 lbs :)...

I plan to do this mod for track days in the summer.

Been wanting to post... too little time, to much to write... time spent on installing takes priority over IWSTI.COM.... but I will get to it one of these days... just removed another 1 lb from a secret location in the car tonight...

Also gonna replace the antenna support bracket in the rear with velcro... that should save another 1/8 lb.

Here's some basic info on the car:

COBB TBE - not sure of the weight
ACPT driveshaft 14.5 lbs
COBB pulley 1.25 lbs
Deka ETX12 battery 9.5 lbs
OMP Comfort seats - 29.0 lbs + 6.0 lbs bracket per side (I will later be designing custom aluminum brackets... I feel these brackets are way overdesigned and heavy)

Rest of the weight reduction was done by removing stuff that's not necessary while maintaining all the interior trim and functional parts of the car... and by replacing all metal brackets with either velcro or cable ties.

1. Actually, I thought the AC disengages at WOT. Can somebody please confirm this? Either way, it's the first car I've EVER been in where I noticed that the AC did not significantly affect acceleration... and now I know why! I actually read about the AC disengaging at WOT shortly after I posted.

Is the STI the only Impreza model that does this? Or do the RS and WRX also have this cool (no pun intended) feature?

2. Defroster works just fine. It automatically engages AC so that it heats up quicker (AC either helps to cool OR heat)... but without the AC, it just means a bit longer for the windshield to defrost... besides, everytime I move it to defrost and the AC light comes on, I immediately turn it off. I can't say I like that feature that Subaru put in.

Oct 26th update

So tonight a few more things came out...

1. The 2 trunk springs (1 lb each for a 2 lb savings). Man is that stock STI trunk and wing heavy. It is 41 lbs for the wing and trunk without the trunk bars and springs. So that is 17 lbs for the wing, and 24 lbs for the trunk.

I plan to go with the spec C and a MUCH lighter wing... so we'll see what I can rig up to hold the trunk up in place of those 2 springs. Right now, with the current weight, what I do is flip the 2 levers on the arms where the springs went and the trunk rests open about half way... it gets me by until I get my new trunk and can rig up something more functional.

2. Removed rear door handle brackets (the one that the "pocket" screws to) to save 1/4 lb per side. At first, I removed these and put them back... because the insert with pocket and power window switch is only held in by 1 clip and the screw. I could remove the front ones because they were longer and held in by 2 clips and a screw and therefore would not "slide out" when you closed the door. However, after giving this some thought, I came up with a brilliant idea---- VELCRO!!! I stuck some double sided tape on the plastic "ledge" at the back of the door panel where the insert comes to rest... brought up that edge level with the blue suede trim.. then stuck on a round velcro "hook" on it... stuck the velcro "loop" on the insert and bingo... it doesn't come out any more when you close the door... 1/2 lb total saved! Woohoo!

The defogger operates like this with the AC:

AC does two things, cool air, and remove moisture (condensation from the cabin air occurs on the evaporator coils). That cold air gets run though the heater core creating now hot air without the previous vapor. So the fog on the inside of your windows goes away by not only heating the fog to where it is no longer conensating on the glass, but removed from the air completely by the AC unit.

You'll noticed your defogger works much faster with the AC running. With the defroster element in your back windshield it works even faster and helps to rid some of the condensation on the outside of the window too.

BTW, a factory support Suby team (from NorCal) came to Button Willow a few weeks ago and they claimed 2600 with driver (looked to be about 160).

The car looked like there was no extra weight left on it at all. He had about 100hp more than me and i was at 3500 with my ass in it. He only had me by 4secs but shoulda had me by 8-10.
