Default Only STI?Focus RS will stop production

http://www.motoring.com.au/this-may-be-the-last-ford-focus-rs-until-2024-107427/

Smy confirmed that production of the Focus RS for Australia would end next February or March, meaning that final shipments will arrive here around mid-2018.

“It will be the end of Focus RS for us by around the middle of next year,” he said.

After that, Ford hyper-hatch fans will have to wait for the Blue Oval to produce a new range-topping RS version of its next-generation Focus, which isn’t due to appear until late 2018 at the earliest and more likely 2019.

Given the current (third-generation) Focus was released in 2011 but the existing Focus RS wasn’t rolled out for another five years in 2016, it could be 2024 before we see another Focus RS.

I'm wondering why manufacturers don't love to make "bargain sports car".
I love all kinds of bargain sports cars. They really represent the true meaning of grassroot motorsports: track days, Autox....

They might not be as perfect as some entry level super cars but they are fun, fast and AFFORDABLE.

TypeR remains the only competitor for 2018 STI.

It needs more R&D resources, don't have much margin on them, and only sell a few. Its a niche market. So its not a priority for them to make these types of cars.

Everyone always talked about "oh the STI has better competition now". I've always said that, as great a car as the RS is, it will be gone. Competition means its around to actually compete. Not 2-ish years of severely limited availability and buh-bye. And in all those 2 years STI sales didn't languish. That being said, I would like to see it return, but as a permanent model to really compete. It would keep advancing this niche market.

And don't worry... the Golf R is still around to compete. Isn't the A class benz coming too? Then maybe the A45 will be here soon too.

I agree with you.
The Benz and golfr are not the direct competitors for TypeR and STI although they have similar power, price and four doors.
Golfr feels more like a fast daily drive; STI is kind of harsh for daily but perfect for weekend drive.

Not saying this article is true - I always have a slight suspicion until a real credible news source runs with a story - but one must give it some thought.

They have at least 2000 off MSRP now. I'm surprised STI sells better than focus rs, maybe because of pricing.

I've heard of this a good bit in my area, even when you ride up in a car with the same value type looking to trade in they would just give you odd looks.

Stories though. Insane mark up and that Type R that was being sold close to DC at 60k is no better. Dealers are a good reason why sports cars dont sell as well as they should.

Just checked and they are going for over 50K CAD here in Ontario which is laughable. A fully loaded STI is around 45K. I have only seen one focus RS in a city of 7 million people.

Relatively small market with high development costs. Then they tend to be abused and blown up. These do not lend themselves to making them profit centers. They only way they pay for themselves is through recognition/awareness and/or premium pricing.

for those who don't actually like to drive their STI all that much

K - I admit I drive other cars for my passengers benefit - particularly my wife. But for me? Wouldn't think of another car that doesn't cost upward of $75k. That said my STI was ideal for my former commute - even though it had no canyons or even significant hills. Who knows where I'll end up commuting next. I'll keep the STI even if it's not as well suited.

50K CAD is still a bargain.
In comparison, I'm too poor to judge those overpriced porsche, M cars.

Ford is pretty good a creating performance models, having a short production run and then orphaning them once out of warranty. They have no long term commitment to performance models except the Mustang.

Went to look at the RS recently. The whole crazy dealer model does not work. Salesperson know nothing about the cars and if there is any hint of it being popular they dealer adds market markup of $K to get the most from these models. And then they wonder why no one likes the car buying experience.
