I have not been able to get the new infotainment system to show my Text messages from my phone, Moto X 2014. I also tried an iPhone, Nexus 5, and Samsung Galaxy S5. All pair just fine, but no envelop icon.
The setting is on your phone that enables this, not your car. After pairing go into your Bluetooth connection list and hit the information or settings button for that connection. you then have to turn on the additional features. For iPhone its..

Not sure exactly about the MotoX but should be similar since it should be a industry standard with Bluetooth not so much the phone.
I'm reading the brochure right now and in the small print it says, "Starlink can read incoming texts out loud when the vehicle is traveling at speeds over 5mph, and can display incoming texts on screen when the vehicle is traveling at speeds lower than 5mph,..." This we all know, but it continues to say, "...7" system required." The only reason I mention this is because you noted you have an STI, but didn't mention if you upgraded or failed to mention that you have the limited edition, and it's not clear by reading this thread which system you have.
UGH! I can't believe this. I am now very upset that I wasted my time trying to sort this out for three days and bugging you all with it all based on bad info from my sales person.
Thanks for your help and I am sorry to have wasted everyone's time. I am happy that at least there is no solution to be found, which is a solution in and of itself. A relief and a disappointment wrapped into one!
Sorry to be the one bringing the bad news. Don't sweat bothering anyone here for honest questions, this is what the forum is for.
Since it's so new, maybe you can convince your dealer to upgrade the head unit for misleading you or at least just pay the difference in the upgrade. It's worth asking if you and your sales person discussed it specifically.
So Subaru of America just sent me this page using my VIN/2016 STI, stating that the text feature should work.
I highlighted in red and told them their books are for the wrong car (I think Outback) as my 6.2 inch screen does not have those buttons and it doesn't have the damn Message icon.
I did a good bit of research on this with my '15 stock stereo. With my windows phone, had no issues with the texting function. When I switched to android, it was gone. Based on what I am reading here, the issue still exists where they offer the functionality, provided your phone speaks the head units older bluetooth language, or protocol.
The issue is that these head units use an older bluetooth protocol dealing solely with texting.. For some reason, my windows phone used it as well even though it was new. Any android phone with 4.4.2 and up will most likely not work with the texting feature until Subaru updates the head units firmware, which will probably never happen. I can't speak for iphones.
My advice would be to bring this up with your dealer, get your money back by putting the HU back to stock and get a better one with the money as they were very misleading.
All of the latest pioneer NEX models have way better features and two of the higher ones offer Android Auto which works amazingly well with texting. I love my 8100NEX very well integrated with more in the future, software-wise.
I can confirm that on my 2016 STI Limited with 7" Harman Kardon nav system, text messages are read aloud while driving. I am running an iPhone 6 with iOS version 8.4
When parked, messages are displayed on-screen but not read aloud.
Just to be clear, are you on USB or Bluetooth? I ordered the same car setup and own the same phone and I'm anxious to know how it's going to work with all the combinations of systems and phones. Thanks in advance.
So from what I've gathered, you can only get text messages on the upgraded head unit with the 7" screen. I have the 2016 base head unit with the 6.2" screen and I haven't been able to get text messages at all.
Yep- dealer told me the same thing AFTER i purchased and was delivered the car. Never once did they say anything about the Text feature only being available in the 7" Screen.
My 2012 Base STI read texts aloud... my 16 with Starlink cant? WTF Subaru.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
