Keep in mind the new BMW's dont have oil dipsticks. You drive it until the oil light comes on, then you drive to the dealer, then they either a) drain the oil, measure it, add more oil, then put it back in...or b) change the oil.

I dont know about you but I like being able to check and change the oil myself. Going to the dealer for that sounds like a huge PITA.

I gave my opinion once, but I'll expand on that.

Again, it all depends on how and what you use your car for. Where I live and the fact I have kids, I would NEVER get a 135i. If I didn't have kids this would honestly be a tough decision. I really do think I would opt for the STI though. Main reasons would be it's just a more practical car for what I want to do. I want a fun, all-weather car. The STI is cheaper or will be I think once both models are released. My car isn't used as a status symbol to get women (BMW I think would look better to most women).

Last, but not least, I know my car will be modified. In my opinion, it would not be wise to mofidy a brand new BMW. Maybe minor mods like wheels and an exhaust. Nothing beyond that. I know if I had one I would want to modify beyond that point and I just think the Evo or STI are better for that right now. Maybe in a 2-3 years when you could possibly get a 135i at a better price and didn't have too long to go on the warranty. Even then though, the people that mention working on a car yourself and how technologically advanced the BMW is, I probably wouldn't want to touch the thing for fear of breaking something.

Both cars will be great cars for sure.

I DID NOT buy my 04 STi for the looks (absolutely, positively, 100%, no ifs ands or buts)....and I dont see why anyone would...ts not a pretty car!! Its got a face only I mother could love!!

I bought it because its fast, handles great, very reliable, AWD, affordable and you can work on it yourself.
Funny, I had the same reaction. Form follows function...I really don't care what a car looks like as long as it does the things I want it to. If style was a consideration, I would have never bought the car due to the size of the hood scoop and wing.

1 series is going to be one the best all around small yet highly modifiable cars to get.

I have a friend that put a down payment on his 135i last week. He said he wants a piece of my STi on the Ring after he's broken the car in. I'll report back when that happens

Seriously though, I think BMW made a smart move by building the 135 especially at the projected cost. It will be nice to have a German car in our turbocharged sub-$35k battle arena.

These two cars are my top options for my next car. It's going to be a really tough choice to replace my WRX with one of these. Both will be fine driver's cars. I haven't experienced the STI, but I push my '03 WRX around autox and love how balanced and easy it is to drive. But I never drove a BMW before and would love to see what fine machine like it can do. It'll come down to multiple test drives to find out which car speaks to me more.

Of course I may just decide to keep my WRX and buy a new Miata instead. Tough decisions...

The aftermarket support for the bmw turbocharged series is going to get big in the near future, and these cars will be making great power.

The body lines don't like to good on the BMW...not saying that the hatch STI is any better but I would give the STI the upper hand for its looks. But you can't go wrong with either...Would like to drive both before buying either. If it is $33k for the BMW it will be well worth it. You sacrifice a little with both cars...guess you can really go wrong with either.

The 135 is going to be even sweeter when BMW decides to put a real LSD back there!!!

There a good looking car and hopefully are modifiable, but refering to gas mileage and power. Its tough to say. For half the money an STi or EVO can make the same power. Not sure if id want to modify the 135i. Everyone who bought a STi knew what they were getting into. As for the bimmer; I think it be nice for a stock luxury car for the price. But its tough. People have different opinions.

Just my $.02

p.s. Here is a link to some good info on the 135:

Honestly, I'd take the BMW over the new STi hands down. It's much more of a mature, older person's car. The new 08 STi looks like a ford focus on steroids.

The 135i looks OK. Kinda shortened though. But twin turbos? Is that easy to modify?

The front looks like it has been mushed. That's been pretty typical with BMW lately. I do like the ass end.
